Jody, Wow…That's quite an offer there! You better be careful-once the in house barrels are done, I'll definately need some testing done to see how they preform…so if you're serious, I might just take you up on that! I really don't have a very good shooting place right now, everything is in limbo on that end. You provide the ammo and time and I can provide the steel!
Healey55, The lengths wouldn't be a problem at all…its easier for me to make shrouds and barrels as long as possible and cut to the needed length. With the S&W custom shop lug style, I'm not familar with it, so pictures are in order.
Sorry Mike, that's one thing I can't do-putting Dan Wesson on it…I don't want a lawsuit! Can provide plain ones with no markings…

That's a shame. Perhaps I could find an engraver locally who would put the markings on them, or I could live with just the cartridge engraved to look like the original Monson style. Yeah, that would work.
BTW, IMHO, any drilling and tapping should be at customer request and not standard. I certainly don't want mine drilled and tapped. Also, for those who want a picatinny rail on the bottom, couldn't the heavy underlug be machined in that format? Just a thought.
I am looking forward to future developments.

Zoom, I think the lug would have to be a inch wide like your modern semi auto's have
for it to be wide enough to use the standard off the shelf accessories, if the heavy shoud
lugs were just machined in the picatinny format then we would need custom
rings/mount's/clamps for accessories…. Maybe I'm wrong on that.
And your totally right, drilled and tapped should not be standard.

Actually the picatinny rail on a Kimber is 7/8" if I measured correctly. So to make it work the underlug would have to be 1/4" wider -- maybe a new barrel/shroud designation: VX8, the X meaning extra-heavy?

Thanks Jody and jagg, really appreciate the offer to help out!!!!
What I'm envisioning is the custom ones would be truly custom. Have a list of options. Like add drill and tap for weaver rails $XX.XX. Delete name engrave -$XX.XX. Select caliber. Select length. Select material. Select slotted or plain, etc, etc, etc. It would be easy here on my end since with a given style shroud it would just be a matter or skipping or adding steps in making it.
With the lower rail, that is quite interesting! That sounds perfect for mounting a flashlight. Thanks for checking on that Mike and coming up with the dimension! That sounds like a regular picatinny rail. I suppose it really depends on which shroud it would go on. Like in that picture I posted of the shroud with the picatinny, its already sticking out on the top, so I'd imagine same thing on the bottom, though I'm thinking prehaps just a short little piece at the end on the bottom and not the full length. Of course we could always go with a PPC like shroud, where it would be real heavy and the rail wouldn't stick over.

Those dimensions were for a large frame gun. Something different would have to be done for the small frame.
I had a vision of the VX shroud being the same as VH above the extractor, then going to full thickness forward of the extractor via a radiused curve the shape of the lower half of the barrel portion of the standard shroud. The picatinny mount would be machined in at the front and a cross-drilled underlug could be an option both for weight reduction and style.

Just a heads up for everybody (especially Eric)... There is a small but subtle difference in the dimensions for Weaver and Piccatinny rails. Make sure you know what you want to have made before you ask for one. I don't remember which is which... one will accommodate both, but not the other way around. I'll leave it to you guys to do the Google work

Any side views of this?
Sorry, only have pics showing the end view.
Those are some very good/interesting thoughts there Mike, thanks!!!
Shoot, good point, I seem to remember reading something about that too. If no one else rises to the challenge, google will be calling me shortly.
Eric
Eric,
I've been looking for a 6" or 8" barrel & heavy ventilated shroud (high polish blue) for my Monson 15-2. If something new was available in the not-too-distant future, I'd hold off looking for an old set. A custom 7" version was would be cool.
Do you have an idea how close you are to a finished product? Any idea on a price point?
Thanks,
Mitch

Thanks goodness I thought I'd missed the boat! I bought a 6 inch Dan Wesson 744 in the early 80's. I have always wanted to add a 10 or 12 inch barrel and shroud, but a 15 would be great to! My interest, time, or personal finances always worked against me so I still don't have one. So I am very pleased to see someone working on this! Good luck with your project. I hope to be a proud buyer of one of your products!

Its been busy here, sorry for the delay in getting back to you guys...Wayne's right. Getting ready for the barrels and shrouds has been keeping me busy and off of here! But mainly, its been a bunch of regular machine shop work (Non-DW related), but starting to get caught up on that. That's good, paying stuff is good for this money pit!
Mitch, Time frame, I have a pretty bad track record for being too optimistic there. But I'm estimating a couple months. The main/last hurdle is getting the rifling machine going and getting the barrels out to some willing members here to test. As far as price, I'm hoping for at least half of what CZ lists their barrels and shrouds for. But having a good product is first and foremost.
earchivist and robhof, Thank you very much for the kind words!
Eric
Eric,
Thanks for the reply. I'm not in any hurry. I was just outbid on a Monson barrel/shroud and won't enter a counterbid. I have both a .44 Magnum and a .357 Magnum DW and would be more than happy to test barrels and shrouds for you. Please keep me in mind and feel free to PM me with any questions.
