i Was at a couples home tonight for a meeting , I have not met this man before tonight...an so after our meeting the ladies went in the kitchen.. and we started discussing.. guns... naturally... he went in another room and came out carrying a pistol pack..... I said.." HEY COOL a Dan Wesson Pistol Pack !"... hahahah he almost dropped the case.. He told me a few minutes later he had NEVER ran into anyone that knew what he had. He got this like 20 years ago to pay off a debt.
Anyway it's a model 15-2, ( I think.. forgot to check on the end tag to see if it was in fact a -2...). It's in stainless with all 4 std. size barrels.. HOWEVER the top lug is not vented.. My question is.. is this un-vented top lug common... the barrels also have the full length under lug. The barrels are also all un-ported.
Thanks.

That's cool that you stumbled on a fellow DW fancier. A stainless gun would have to be a -2, since the stainless versions started production well into the -2 series.
Just going by what I've noticed, a heavy shroud (full length under lug) is most often seen with vents on the top, especially in stainless. But I have seen a couple non-vented heavy shrouds. I knew should have saved a pic.
I do have a pic of a blued 15" shroud in that configuration...

That would also be a 715-2 since they added the 7 to designate the stainless guns. I'm always amazed to hear of people who bought guns many years ago and never fired them. I'm too much of a shooter to have any safe queens, all my guns have been shot and shot again, if I don't like it or it doesn't feel right or shoot well; I get rid of it and buy another.

Yeah.. Rob.. I caught that “7″ I had left off.. but was too tired to go back and correct last night.. lol.. thanks.. ( I can't get anything past you guys.. jeez !! hahahaha)
Hey Charger.. I am in love with the “idea” of a 15″ barrel…. but looking at that thing raised a thought ………….. have you ever fired that 15' hog..??? what is it like.. I mean is it unwieldy too hold up and aim… That's funny cause I can picture myself shooting a 12″.. but for some reason the 15″ I just imagine is somehow unstable …just wondering ?? ( think about it… 15″ is just shy of the smallest federally allowed rifle shotgun barrels !!!!!!!!)
And thanks for the answers, I had not seen non vented barrels as a rule either.. at least not as much..

Hahahahaha.......what A DUMMY !!!!!.... YES.. I thought about asking him to sell it to me.. AFTER I left his house.. and AFTER I had already told him about how much it was worth... I stopped the car.. got out and started kicking myself.... Oh well.. live and learn... hahahahaha..
Actually he's a really, really nice guy and I could not have taken his beauty from him.. and I hope he visits us here .. and perhaps joins.. his name is Shawn..
His son just got stationed in Korea... and I was thinking what a nice thing to pass on to your son.. a 715-2 pistol pack.

Well I never got around to shooting it. It was just to much barrel for me so I sold it last fall. I actually got the shroud pretty reasonable and had Keith at DW to make a custom barrel for it since they don't do anything longer than 10" now.
For me a 10" barrel is long enough for me. Maybe if it had been the Vented shroud it would have been easier to handle but I certainly would spend the money on a VH longer than 10"

THAT. is exactly what I was thinking IMHSA... so let me ask this about that..
Why DO they have the heavy full length under lug and the not full length under lug..
What purpose does the full length under lug serve.. is it to act as a counter balance when shooting free hand ?

I would imagine the extra weight would somewhat reduce recoil, maybe add a little stiffness, although with the way the barrels are attached in two places, that might not add anything. The full length under lug adds muzzle stability in the offhand position, but after a certain length, you can get TOO muzzle heavy. Perhaps it serves as a larger heat sink for barrel cooling, some folks just like the straight lines of the full underlug, and, from a manufacturers standpoint, that type shroud requires less machining, thus less expense.

OH... Dusty.. I never looked .. or rather forgot to look at whether it was adjustable or no on the sights... good point..
Seems like I got another reason to check it out. again.. hahahaha..
and thanks for the thoughts IHMSA on the under lug.. I was thinking about that harmonics as well.. but thought no because of the attachment method.. and the fact that the all 4 barrels , even the short ones are full under lugged.. I like the reason of looks and cost.. that makes sence as well...but who knows..
Thanks.
