Being a newbie to replacing barrels...are barrels reversable ?
Threads the same at each end ?
That would take some foresight I know 🙂
Seems to me it would be a good idea...as soon as the barrel didn't shoot straight, reverse it, and it should work again IMHO.
From what I've read, the 1st part of the barrel is what gets worn out 1st right ? then the bullet won't start spinning, and even if the far end is ok, it's too late to start it spinning. That's my theory anyways 🙂

Barrel tubes are not reversable. Â The threads cut on the OD ends are different but more important than that look at the rifling in your current barrel. Â At the cylinder end there is a short section with no lands and the start of the lands have a fairly gentle taper. Â This forcing cone is to properly seat the bullet in the rifling to start rotation. Â At the muzzel end of the barrel the lands go to the end of the tube and essentially just stop. Â This to maintain the gas seal square to the crown on the end.

Amen to everything Pistolero said...plus, if you look at the threaded length on each end of the barrel you will see that the muzzle end isn't threaded at a length sufficient to fully reach through the frame and properly align to the cylinder. (All of that really doesn't matter because of the thread differences, just another reason it wouldn't work.)

Thx for the info...I sort of forgot about the forcing cone. I wonder if a FC could be built into the frame instead, which would make the barrel reversable ? Maybe I just have too much time on my hands 🙂 Â
The basic DW design would not allow for this. Why do we want to have a reversible barrel tube?
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

I was thinking that the part of the barrel nearest to the forcing cone would be the 1st end to wear out. And, I was guessing that (I'm a retired engineer with 2 much time on my hands 🙂 if the bullet wasn't forced into spinning in the 1st 1" (or ?) then it wouldn't spin at all. So, if a barrel wouldn't shoot straight, turn the barrel around and then when the bullet got to the worn out section it would already be spinning so it would work fine...that's the theory at least 🙂

What is up with the sudden worry about wearing out a barrel? Â I've not seen any used Dan's with wiped out barrel tubes. Â And if I were to ever get a gun with a shot out tube, I'd just order a new one and not worry about it for the rest of my life.
To clarify, I have a few Dan's that were acquired from competition shooters who regularly competed with them in IHMSA matches and USPSA events and NONE of them has any notable barrel wear and are extremely accurate even now. Â Most used Dan's have sat unused for decades in a box or safe with little use let alone enough to shoot out the rifling. Â Dan Wesson built a robust gun and the design makes it an easy thing for the owner to change out a barrel tube, unlike Smiths, Colts and Rugers, which need a gunsmith or a trip back to the factory for such work. Â
Anything worth doing is worth doing well.

+1 what Scorpio said. Colts and Smiths need to have the forcing cone cut once the new barrel is in place. What is not much said is that replacing a barrel on other Revolvers can twist the frame when the original barrel is removed even if done at the factory. The gun may never be accurate again. Value is diminished. Smiths, Manurhins, Korths and Janz are all using the barrel and shroud invented by Karl Lewis. Smith sells a tool to to change the barrel out. It is meant for Smiths and FFLs I think. They don' t encourage gun owners to do it. Janz does though.Â

Do I recall correctly that the .357 Supermags were sold with a second barrel in anticipation of high round counts with light weight, high velocity ammunition? The used .357 SM my son bought several years ago had two barrels, I believe there was something in the box discussing that.
