I will be in the Rockies hiking far from any help and plan on taking my model 44 with 6" compensated barrel as protection in case Smokey gets frisky.
I'll have Buffalo Bore 300 gr lfn but have had one guy recommend the BB +P+ 340 gr that he runs in his Ruger Alaskan.
Not sure if the Model 44 can handle those pressures. Any thoughts?

Buffalo Bore says that this is GTG in Dan Wesson. I am not a Big Bore guy, but when I owned them, I never worried about heavy loads. This is the same frame that handles .445 SM, and much more.
Interesting that Buffalo Bore states:
"We get hundreds of emails asking if this load can be fired in S&W revolvers or some firearm other than what is in the above list. The answer is NO. The above list is all inclusive."
DW is on the list.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

It doesn't matter what you carry out here for bears, keep pulling trigger until it is empty. GOOD Bear spray is the #1 thing to carry, keep it handy at all times.
And keep an eye out for Mama bear--she's always around somewhere.
Don't worry about the cougars....you won't see them

for cougars you should tune your pipes and practice opera, but I would have one ready in the pipe of a DW just in case you're singing sucks

Good idea, I read somewhere before that loud noises scare off the big cats don't think the bears would really care. Unfortunately, that could be true for all the other wildlife, too. Guess that could be a lose, lose. Maybe, just keep the cylinder full and stay alert with your head up.

I am no expert, but if 6 rounds of BB +P+ 340 gr .44 mag does not do the job ...
Maybe this will help?

Oh 6 rounds will do it....the key is being able to get all 6 out before you get run over

Yeah the cougars are also a problem. Last long hike I would periodically scan above us and behind. The trail had lots of rocks and ledges above us and we were several miles from help. Nothing bad but some tension during the hike. Maybe I'm being paranoid, but I don't want to be a statistic.
