My better half bought a 2.5" barrel assembly for my blued 15-2 for Christmas.(God Bless Her) I had to go to the range which is outside to sight in of course. It was a balmy 25 degrees with a stiff breeze. Unfortunately during the process, I had three instances where the extractor jumped the case. This meant driving a pencil down the cylinder chamber and pushing it out. On returning home I was very dissapointed to see that my efforts to shield the frame from the star were not totally successful... (tried to make sure I had my glove between both while driving case out). There are about three very light but noticable stratches now on the frame ,#*#*!!!!

I checked around and see that a product called Blue Wonder bluing kit has some good press. It is only $25 at Cheaper Than Dirt but why waste the money if it won't do the trick, anybody use this product or have any suggestions for a mend?

BTW, I know that this can happen, I clean the cylinders very well, have had this gun for 20 years without a scratch, just really screwed up this time. I did get it sighted in, took quite a while, using the .080 rear and .100 patridge sight shooting 148 WCs with 3.2 bullseye I got to a 3.5" group at 25 yards before I turned completely numb. I would really appreciate any help here, you guys got it together on these guns.

There is a guy on the Auction Arms site that offers hot bluing, says he was the exclusive bluer for Dan Wesson for five years. He is offering to polish and reblue a pistol for $85. Name is Mark, e-mail him at gunbluer@lynchburg.net  (434) 941-4202

He is an FFL so shipping is not a problem, and appears to do business in Lynchburg VA (maybe a VA DWF member is nearby and can check him out). Anyone that can restore a DW blued finish to original quality for $85 may be someone we need to know better.

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

I found Mark's info on GunBroker or AuctionArms and decided I would have him do a shroud for me.  I thought I would try something small before doing an entire gun.  So I sent the shroud and 3 or 4 weeks later it was back and I was very pleased.

I think his turn around time might normally be faster than that but this was around Thanksgiving and he was traveling I think.

Based on my shroud I would let him re-blue a gun as well.  Plus obviously he's done some DW's in his time!

If I understand palo's problem correctly, he really only needs the side plate redone, which should be a pretty small repair, as long as the bluing ended up matching well.

Yes, the side plate is scratched. It is good to know that there is someone who does hot bluing for DWs and also good to know that Jody gives his work a thumbs up. It may be the way to go. Although I have not scratched it before, it does have some rub wear on different edges of the gun. I also saved another 15-2 from destruction via sitting in a damp trunk all summer. The gun was covered with rust and I picked it up for $90. I removed all the rust and the blue was still good but slightly plummed. I will consider this to go also of course. Good stuff guys. I still am curious about the Blue Wonder product, that would be both quicker and cheaper yet for the stratch problem.

I have used the Blue wonder on many of my guns and it's close, but not an exact match to hot blue, but good enough for my regular hunting guns.  It seems to wear well as I've used it on my son's shotgun and it's been in the field alot and still looks pretty good.

On a related note...

My .22 DW revolver is in pristine condition overall, but it has been range fired enough to where the carbon buildup in front of the cylinder needs aggressive cleaning.

Over time, I'm finding that the bluing on the front face of the cylinder is sort of "fading", and most noticeably, the edges on the front of the cylinder have lost their bluing. No rust at all because I keep it oiled; just bluing wear.

I know I'm not the only one this happens to, but the rest of this pistol is still in "new" condition so where the cylinder is worn really detracts from it's looks.

I'm thinking of sending in the cylinder (only) for rebluing by the gentleman mentioned, but am I being a bit anal about this? How about the rest of you guys, would you go for rebluing or just leave it alone since it will likely wear in the same way again?

Cold bluing may be the answer, it will affect the non blued surfaces. I have used the stuff in a blue bottle, can't recall the name, think it was Permablue. It was alright. It sounds like the Blue Wonder may be the best.

Recently I have done some touch up with Hoppe's #9 cold blue product. It's not perfect, but it's not bad, and for only $11.00 from Midway its hard to beat if you don't want to go to the trouble and expense of a full bluing job. Anyway good luck.
