Man of Blues is correct. 4" BA's are worth a premium. Also the interior nut porkchop Barrels are about 3.75 inches, not 4". High Standard barrel assemblies are rare because they never sold them separately or as packs. They are the same as Dan Wesson 14-1 and 15-1 but it can get very confusing as to what one you are buying on an auction site or parts company. There are model 14 and 15 and 14-1and 15-1 and they have different height front sites. IMHO, the gun will never be more accurate than with that original shroud. I have several porkchops and they are amazingly accurate, even the fixed sight guns. I would sell the 15-2 BA and seek a proper one. The only reason I would use an adapter is to put an 8" or longer barrel on it. The longest porkchops were 6". If you really want a sweet shooter put Wolff Springs in. The Wolff trigger return spring makes an incredible difference.

I do have to ask, after looking at the photos you provided at the top posting, do you have any idea when the shroud and barrel you show installed, were actually purchased? I ask because I see a 4 notch nut, and the barrel seems as normal, AND flush (assuming again it was barrel AND shroud change, if you just changed a shroud, id assume with correct gap clearance, there would be about 1/16" protusion of the oem barrel.. I know you posted the original for sale, I would think about holding onto that for a while... just making a comment, as I've been seeing a trend.
Yes it was a barrel, and shroud purchased together from Gunbroker.
I bought two new barrel nuts as I buggered up the nut on the factory 4" barrel. The two notch nut had the notches smoothed out on one side so that you could tighten the nut, but not loosen it [the tool just slid out of the smoothed notches]
The 6" barrel assembly came with a 2 notch nut, but I choose to use the new 4 prong as I didn't want to take a chance on having the same problem as I had with the original nut [although it would seem that someone had purposely smoothed out one side of those two notches].

Also the serial number on this revolver is H10014.
According to this [link below] in 1973 the serial number started at
H10001. Does this mean I have the 14th pistol made in that series?
http://www.histandard.info/datapublic/serial/rserialno.html
So if that is the case, and the pistol is the 14th made, does that make it worth keeping the factory 4" barrel?
If so then I might need to cancel the GB auction?
If you have that 4" High Standard BA on Gunbroker please send me a link. What is it listed under. I will say again though, I think it is a huge mistake. They are made of unobtainiun. I am at a loss to figure out why you need a crane. You cannot put a 15-2 crane on a porkchop. I personally like the ability to remove the cylinder for cleaning without taking the sideplate off.
As far as the serial number being 14, I think it has zero effect on value. There is no cachet to a serial number concerning Dan Wessons unless it indicates an experimental gun. There is a seller on Gunbroker claiming the pistol pack he is selling is the one that was in the Dan Wesson brochure of 1978. Because of an unsupported claim he wants almost 4 times its value. Not happening. There will never be any Jinks Letter or Colt factory letter to document the Providence of a Dan. That information disappeared into the black hole of the BATF. Although Stephen Hawking says that information (energy or matter) can escape a black hole, the BATF is a different matter.

might suggest sending the barrel to EWK for a thread cleanup, I'm sure he could do that affordably..
contact Eric.

Yeah, you guys convinced me, and I pulled the auction. I will keep the 4" barrel, and just have the threads chased out.
One thing, I wasn't able to get the shroud off the barrel. Shouldn't the shroud just pull off the 4" HS just like the DW shroud?
Somebody, maybe a Leo, probably l converted the gun to a fixed barrel by milling the nut and loctiting the nut on. Probably also glued the barrel to the shroud. Heating the barrel and shroud in the oven would work to melt it. Or use a propane torch to heat it. Probably the problem with your threads Is the loctite.

Good idea. I will give it a try next week.

Early on, DW made fixed barrels an option for police departments to purchase for issue to their officers as an alternative to Colt and S&W. Possibly HS did the same?
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

to preclude the possibility of further damage, rendering this unusable.... please send it off to EWK, after calling and speaking with Erik, ... let him use his expertise in this, instead of totally hosing something up... ok?just trying to be helpful.
Good advice, I will follow it.......thanks.

just to clarify, I was meaning the barrel and shroud, not the whole gun.
He should be able to clean up the threads, and if necessary face the barrel, and supply new bbl nut, after getting the shroud off.
best of luck, and glad you kept the ba

Ok guys an update.
I took your advice, and ordered the adapter plate, and new sight.
For the record, I hate it when people make a post like mine, and never update it when they are finished.......lol.
So here is how everything looks with the new parts. Also, I re-gapped the barrel to .004 while I was at it.

Thank you sir.
Since shooting this old DW I do plan to buy a few more in the future as they shoot really great. For the money a DW can't be beat, IMO.
I would love to own a Colt Python, but for the money they are bringing I couldn't bring myself to shoot it. However, the DW is perfect for taking out to the range.
The next DW will most likely be a 22 revolver, or a 44 magnum.
One other thing is that I do prefer the High Standard hammer vs the DW.
Last, what is that dark color of bluing on my barrel? I got the darkest blue I could buy, and the rest of the pistol isn't nearly as dark as the barrel shroud. [note, the barrel was already in great shape when I bought it so I didn't re-blue it.]
Buddy, the frames and sideplates and shrouds are different steels and different manufacturing techniques. The frame is investment cast and turns purple to some degree over time. It is said to be from the silica in the ceramic mold. In outdoor light the differences are more noticeable. The purple hue is nicknamed Barney after the purple dinosaur of TV. Other firearms call it plum. Unless it is very pronounced we tend to accept it after a while. Some folks like it more than others. Because of that though, we can polish and reblue the nasty scratched up sideplates and it will not affect the value of the gun. Watch out for that extractor star. And don't let others handle your Dan without warning them to not work the ejector.
