A friend that has an FFL and deals privately has an older Monson made 44 stainless with 8 inch barrel and the 3 inch barrel. It is his private piece, but he would consider selling to me. He has only put 50 rounds through it and says it's in perfect condition with the wood grips.
My question is what would be a fair price for this?
He provided this link for comparison.

A local dealer has a 744 with 8" barrel listed for $650. The price is high for most areas but about average for south east Texas.

Is the comparison actually his asking? Not so bad for a 744 8", with a 3(?)" thrown in, as long as 8"+3(4)" is what you want. Around here 15/715's are moderately common, 44/744's less so. If you do this as a private sale, you save sales tax and shipping/transfer fees, which may be a +. That comparison one that he gave you is too much money.
BTW, if you do this and don't want the shorter barrel (and it's SS), well, I know where you might find a willing and easily accessible buyer
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Steve's right: even with the extra barrel the price is on the high side. However, if you really want the extra barrel, well, then we're talking a little different tune. More important than the extra barrel are things like the original barrel wrench and "shim". The original box and instruction manual would be a plus.

Yes, you are right. My friend is getting things together. He says, he has the original box, but with all the boxes he has, it will be hard to find. I've known him for 15 years, but how many years he's been in the firearms business - I'm not sure. Really nice guy though.
Steve,
I should take you to meet him sometime. He is located in Madison, CT. You interested?

Absolutley. Pretty busy time at work right now, but I will have extra free time last 2 weeks of December.
My 744 6VH was $545 on auction, so the total went over $600 to me. 4" barrel is a not so common item, and if the scope is included, that's all the better.
I believe anything up to $800 is an OK price, $700 would make it a very good deal for everything in the photo. It always depends on what you want, if this was exactly what I wanted, I'd pay $800.

Nah, the shroud probably measures 3", but the barrel is 4"...or at least it should be, according from the normal way DW does things. Basically, each vent slot on the top denotes 2". So two vents means 4" barrel...then 4 vents means 8" barrel and so on.
Good looking gun.

Well if I didn't have a 744 VH8/VH4 I would be trying to beat you to this gun, I consider it a very good price for the gun. And it has extra B&S and I guess scope and mounts.

Update! I put a deposit on the 744V shown above. It comes with the 4 inch barrel and tools. The seller also has some paperwork and hopefully the box. He's still looking. The final purchase is waiting on the 'permit to carry'. We are thinking 6 to 8 weeks for the permit.
