I would like to draw on your collective wisdom regarding values.

I have the opportunity to pick up a cosmetically challenged DW 44 with some pitting and minor rust to the frame due to poor storage 🙁  The barrel, cylinder and action are all fine.  Its a 6 incher.

Worth $260?  Sorry I don't have any pics to post of it.   I figure at that price I wouldn't have to worry about getting the bluing dinged up, or what is left of it.

I buy ugly guns all the timeLaugh.  For $260 I would have already bought it and had pictures posted…  Everybody needs true shooters and they don't have to be pretty.  Wait until you see the ugly 15 I'm working on getting–I guarantee it is worse than yoursSmile

From the description, I think the price sounds great.Smile Lately the idea of getting an old war horse is more appealing to me, too...something that you just know has got some real miles on it.

There's a guy on the Single Actions forum who got a new USFA six shooter & sanded off half it's bluing, leaving it bare metal in places. It looked pretty cool, like it was already 50 years old. I'll see if I can find that thread.

Post some pics if you get it...do a "beater" or "old war horse" thread.Cool

Everyone looks for different values and attributes in buying a gun. For me, it's got to be a shooter first and foremost, I've had some nice looking guns that I don't (didn't)enjoy shooting, every gun I own now, I enjoy shooting, I also happen to like the look of all of them too.

After all that, I'm sort of in the market for a project gun too. I'd take a "warhorse" 44 at $260 right now

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Thanks Guys for the input, that is much appreciated.

I looked at the gun in person yesterday and gave it the revolver checkout.

The DW 44 is cosmetically ugly as hell (fine, doesn't bother me too much), but the timing was quite loose.  When the gun was put in lockup (hammer cocked and held back, trigger pulled and held, hammer gently released) there was pretty noticible side to side rotation of the cylinder, and a bit of endshake.

I purchased a gun with poor timing once, and regretted it ever after, so I decided to pass on this one.

The seller did have a very nice model 15, 6 incher for $400 as well.  That looked great and was tight.  I might consider that one.

Yeah, and a lot can be hiding in dark pics, too.

I guess if the .44 is loose, worn & cosmetically challenged, it may not be worth that price. It could easily eat up a couple hundred more, to get it tight again.

GoodLuck with whichever way you decide to go.Smile
