Finally got time to take the 44 mag to the range.
First off, there were all hand loads but I've been loading a long time for my Marlin 1894.
That to say I don't think this is an ammo issue.
When I purchased the gun it was poorly maintained. It had a ported barrel that required soaking to get it off.
Bought a non-ported barrel and after cleaning the accumulated crud of neglect from all over but I did not disassemble the action.
Took it to the range and the pistol works fine single action. Every shot goes bang.
But, do double action - trigger only - and it will get off 2 or 3 shots and then *click*.
Very odd. In every case I rotated back to the "dud" and it would discharge fine.
Seems to me I read a very long while back that cylinder timing issues can cause this.
Just odd that it's only using the trigger in double action mode.
I wish I'd looked at the rounds to see if and where the pin had landed in relation to center of the primer but I didn't.
Any ideas? Thanks!

Make sure the grip screw isn’t screwed in too far. That will limit the travel and force of the hammer which results in light strikes.
And your primers are seated deep enough in the primer pockets?
Possible the previous owner changed out the hammer spring for a lighter one or cut coils? I tend to doubt that as disassembling the large frame revolvers is more of a PITA than with the small frame revolvers but who knows.

Seems that would be a constant for each shot. This only happens after the 2nd or third using just the trigger to cycle.
I'll check it though since I did replace the grip with a Pachmyr.
All the primers are good - like I said, they all shoot fine if I position by hand and shoot single action (cock hammer then pull trigger).
The issue only happens when using trigger only - Double Action.
lol - I opened a Dan many many moons ago and I still regret it. So I didn't check.
As neglected as this gun was I doubt the previous owner did anything - certainly not cleaning.

“Would be constant” - No not necessarily. I’ve run into this with my current 715 as well as my older 715 (that split and was replaced by DW). Though I think the old one had an endshake issue and I installled small shims. The short Double action hammer throw doesn’t hit as hard as the single action hammer strike so that’s why you see it in DA. Last weekend I had 5-6 light strikes in DA out of ~70 rounds. I think it’s a combination of high primers and/or the lighter 8# hammer spring I installed.
My 744 has been flawless. Never had any light strikes

There could be end shake and a cylinder shim needed.
Forgot to mention this. I had an endshake issue with my Monson 715 until it broke and was replaced with a Norwich frame. But Bob at DW reused the cylinder and crane etc from the old revolver. Would I still have endshake issues with the whole cylinder and crane setup, installed/fitted to my new Norwich frame?
I didn’t tell Bob to do this but I suspect they wanted to limit how much money and materials they were wasting on replacing my revovler. Or since bob knew my 715 was extremely accurate and he already did a trigger job, he figured why not reuse the parts?

This is a good read and may fix your issue: https://www.danwessonforum.com/forum/things-a-dan-wesson-owner-should-know/dw-grip-screw-function/
