Hello!
This is going to be one of my first posts here. Long time lurker.
So I have recently picked up a 6" and a 2 1/2" barrel and shroud for a Model 12 (porkchop) for my Model 14. Now the problem here is that the 6 and 2 1/2 inch shroud/barrels did not come with the external barrel nut. So my thoughts are to have the shrouds milled out for an internal nut and the barrels shortened, by I believe 1/4". Firstly is this doable? I have multiple machine shops near me but I am limited on gunsmiths. Is this something a reputable machine shop could get done or would you all trust a machine shop to do this kind of work. It does not appear to be a challenging job but then again I am not a machinist.
Again thank you all for all the amazing information on these beautiful guns!

What is the thickness of the shroud wall at the barrel nut? Figure out the thickness of the barrel nut (if you don't have one at this point I can measure one of mine). I can measure the thickness of one of my shroud walls *internal barrel nut) and then see if you would have somewhere around that thickness left after milling. If so I can measure the depth of the recess for the nut in mine and then figure your barrel length. The only tricky part may be the tap for the barrel threads.

I looked into having a gunsmith create a 15” barrel and collected the following info:
Barrel thread .531-40 uns-3a
Rate of twist 1:18.75 for barrels under 10”
1:14 for 10” & longer
Forcing cone 11-deg angle .007 length
Crown .020 deep no specific diameter
Hopefully you find this info useful.
I would use a modern 21/2" or 6" Barrel tube and an exterior nut and forgo all the machining. A regular interior nut could probable be used instead of the hard to find 12 sided nut. Keep in mind that porkchop shroud front sights are of different heights. If you have a Model 11,14,14-1 or 15-1 shroud the gun will shoot low. The front sight is not easily interchangable.
