edit: i made a mistake the cylinder will not chamber 357.
i just purchased a dan wesson, marked 38 on the barrel, the cylinder will take 357mag ammo.
my gunsmith said there is no reason i can't shoot 357, and can change barrels to differing length.
anyone disagree or have any comments?

My guess is that you have a .357 magnum pistol, and somebody changed the barrel shroud at some point and replaced it with one marked .38. .38 and .357 barrels would be interchangeable.
Most Dan Wessons do have removable barrels, could you post pics of your pistol so we can tell for sure the model etc? Oh, and welcome to the

Same bullet, same barrel. Just the .357 is hotter and has longer case. If you can
drop a .357 in the cylinder you can shoot .357.
Because the .38 shrouds are somewhat rare you could buy a used .357 shroud
and sell the .38 for a profit ( depending on condition ) if that suits you.

I just went through this situation with the .38 DW. I bought a pistol in the box labeled as a model 9 [DW .38 spl.]. It has the .38 spl shroud too. However the frame will hold a .357 mag. ctg So the pistol is really not a model 9 [.38 spl]. If your cylinder holds a .357 it is no doubt a .mod. 15-2 .357 mag. A model 9 [.38 spl will not hold a .357 mag.].
