I'm in Hopkinsville.
Well, we're on the same wave length. I intended on getting the side plate off today for a look see, but, I didn't make it. Try for it again tomorrow. And, like yawl, I figured, what have I got to lose. When I get to the innards, I'll try to get a pic, and hope to post it.
I'll post again when I get inside.
Edited @ 12:14 CDT I forgot to add this earlier. I read somewhere recently, that a DW 15-2 owner had reduced the gap between the cylinder and barrel, from the factory recommended .006, down to .003. I don't recall why he did this, but, I was wondering if anybody had heard of this before, or had actually done it also.
Thanks,

Couple more things I need to mention.
1) I noticed that my bluing on my gun looks purple in certain light. Hadn't noticed that before, wonder what caused that?
2) This link below, that Ron provided in the 2nd. post of this thread, about 3/4ths of the way down in his tune-up, where he mentions "The Hammer Boss". What and where is the hammer boss? It isn't mentioned in my exploded parts list in my instruction booklet?

The purple hue is what we call the Barney effect. It is a result of the bluing process vs. the metal type. It happens over time to some DWs and some other brands of firearms. Doesn't hurt anything just adds character.

1) Is there any photos of that hammer boss, cause I don't think it's visible in any of those pics that you posted in your average joe thread?
2) Another concern I have now is that I've called Genny at DW 2 days in a row, and got a recording. On the second call, I finally decided that if I want to speak to Genny, I need to leave a message. Then after hanging up, and further pondering of this situation, I now believe that I should have mentioned in the message that I was interested in the crank lock part, and asked ship cost, availability, time frame to get it, etc. Then when my # came up, she could just have all the info at hand, and left me a message. When I call back I intend to do it that way, now that I know how the game is played.
3) Does anybody know what the time frame is, if anybody decides to actually send in an DW to factory for repair? Just from my experience trying to contact DW by phone, something tells me that it might be a long wait for service? What say you?

I haven't sene one of mine in yet, so I can't give any personal esperience. However, others who have sent their DW's in, have usually said it takes 3-4 weeks for turnaround. It depends on (of course) how busy they are the week your gun arrives. Sorta the same as having a muffler replaced on your car...if there's 5 cars ahead of yours, it's gonna be a while.
As LB stated, the Barney effect (or Plum, as others like to call it) is often a natural occourence to older gun metal. It adds character, which often can look really nice. Colt, Ruger & others often have their own Barney era too, so you're not alone. However, when it get's to the point of darn-near pink, I would start seriously considering a nickel plate job!
Here's a couple Gunbroker auction pics...

Your reply about "service" is about as I supected also. Thanks for your pics!
I finally got the side plate off. I thought it would've come off easier since the Rev. took it off when he lost my crank lock. If not for the Ave joe method, posted by Shootist, I probably would've never got it off. I didn't know about the tap, tap, tap, I used dead blow hammer, vibrate off method. I also used a flat blade screwdriver to pry it off when I coud get it inserted. It made a small mark, but I don't think it'll matter.
Looked pretty clean to me, not gooped up with grease or anything. I took some pics, yawl can tell me how it looks to you. I've got to get'em into the computer, and then try to post'em. If I can't Blacktop said he would.
Anyway, it maybe tomorrow before that happens though. Getting kinda late.
EDIT@ 11:41 PM CDT I noticed in the Ave. Joe thread pic that showed the cylinder, and the crank in that pic appeared to have a spring. Mine doesn't have that spring. Ave Joe cylinder must be a different model than mine. At least I hope it is since I don't have the spring.

The most difficult part of it is getting the sideplate off on some guns. My 715's took forever to get off the first time, but one of the other guns I've had it just fell off as soon as I took the screws out.
I've had one DW gun (my blued 15 Fixed Barrel) give me grief with the side plate. I ended up shaving down a nylon paint mixing stick to the "just right" tool, to pry that plate off without marring the finish. The factory lube inside ended up looking like hardened rosin wax.
BTW, good to see ya around, Hemiram.

No, they should all be the same. Those springs are kind of important.

Finally got a call from cz-DW today. I had addressed my emails and calls to "Genny" as I had seen on this BB. But, it was Pricilla that called and said she was the only one in parts. She said there was a Genny that worked there but, was in another office.
I've decided that I'm gonna send my DW back to the factory for the repairs. I'll post here when I get it back if yawl would like the results?
Thanks for helping.

This probably where your trouble began then the Smith didn't get it back together
right and your cranelock came out. Either way Keith at DW will get it running again !
Yes ! do post back when it's done I would like to hear the finished report.
Did you get a chance to get a picture ? If so I'd like to see what else was in there.

Yeah, I got some pics, but when I tried to upload them to my computer I was unable to get the camera software to get'em transfered. So, with the missing spring, and, camera problems, and maybe something else might be missing also, I figured this is becoming too much of a hassel. So I decided to send it back so I can get it repaired sooner.
It didn't looked gummed inside the side plate, to me anyway. When I can get the camera to cooperate I'll still post the pics, if I can. Or, I may have to call on your offer to post'em. You've heard the old adage"When it rains it pours"? Well, it's true. Take my word for it.
Thanks.

Maybe they're supposed to be the same, but, I'm looking at your
pic of the cylinderand your crane, and the end of your crane, that's
sticking out with the spring on it, is longer than the end of my crane.
There's no way that a spring could be placed on mine, such as yours is.
There's simply no room for a spring.
Is that spring on the end of your crane, does that fit into a hole, or what?
I wish I could get my pics on here for you to see. Hope I can do just that soon.

Good chance that bulletproof does not have a 15-2. My guess is that his might be a porkchop model, which has a different crane. I just looked at two cranes, one from a 715 that looks just like the photo in the Avaerage Joe photos. The other one is a cylinder/crane I bought at auction some time ago, and it has a different configuration, a small boss on the forward end, and a much different rearward configuration. Looking at some other photos here, I now think this one is a Model 15 (not 15-2) cylinder/crane. As I look at it, there is no slot for the crane lock, and the spring/spring mounting configuration on the back of the crane is very different.
Looks like this crane:

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

In his original post he stated the cylinder will fall out if the gun is tipped forward. No way that can happen with a chop…
True, since the crane is held into the frame by the 'Chop portion of the shroud.
Now if someone screwed a 15-2 shroud on the front of a 'Chop, then the crane & cylinder would fall out at will…wouldn't THAT be a mess!
*EDIT* Here's some closer pics I took tonight of my 15-1 'Chop crane & cylinder. This is what Steve's probably describing. Bulletproof, if yours looks like this, there's definitely a problem!

No, I've definitely got a 15-2, and my crane doesn't look like any of those. Also, mine doesn't have a hole in the end either. It looks very similar to the top pic that Blacktop posted above. Only mine doesn't have a hole in the end, no spring, and the" Boss", I believe yawl called it, is shorter.
You'll see what I mean if I get my pics uploaded. Sorry for the delay. A pic is really worth a 1000 words.
Thanks,

Hey Chargerfan!
Bulletproof- I've been inside a lot of 15-2's, and they all had the same crane in it, with a hole, a spring and a plunger, as in post #34. I had one of the first DW 15-2's made, and it had it, and I saw a Norwich gun about a year ago, and it was the same as every one of the four 15-2's I have owned and my 715 too. I don't recall any of the "bosses/plunger" being different on any of the guns.
Doesn't matter, DW will fix it up and you'll be all set.
