See, that's just it, he didn't tell me he knew nothing about DW's, just said bring it to me so I can take a look at it.   Then, after 2 days, the old guy called and began telling me it looked like somebody had filed on the cylinder stop, and that a part was broken off, that he couldn't get parts anyway etc.   I said are you crazy, no one has ever had their hands on this DW before, I'm the only owner, not many folks have ever seen it, let alone opened it up, which I told him all this when I took it to him!   His reply was, I'm just reporting my findings, I did nothing to it.   I asked him why he didn't tell me from the git go that he knew nothing about DW's.   I don't remember his reply, probably went off in another direction, to keep blame off himself.   And, like I said he's a retired pastor.   So Sad, that you can't believe anyone these days!

Anyway, I mentioned the crank spring in my accompanying letter to Keith, describing the problems, and asked should there be a spring there, or not.    So, I should know the answer soon, I hope.

Thanks,

Believe me, we already have all the answers Laugh

-Yes, there is supposed to be a spring

-Yes, there is a hole in the crane

-Yes, the plunger is in the hole and probably the spring

-The only unknown is where the crane lock is... probably shoeved in the hole with the other parts (hope not)

BP did the cranelock fall out and you mis placed it ?

It was raining the evening I went to pick my DW up, and he had told me that a part had broken off from somewhere.   Thinking that if it was broken then it would be no good anyway, and not having a clue about if  the part was actually useable or not, I just placed it inside the styrofoam DW box, loose, instead of placing it inside a closeable bag of some kind.   And, of all times for the DW box not to close completely, this was the time.    So, somewhere in between the Rev's house, & driveway, and my truck, driveway, & house, naturally the cranelock spilled out somewhere.    I retraced my steps several times at home and back to his house & driveway, using a large powerful magnet.    It's very rare to ever find a small part like that once you've lost it.  At least that's been the story of my life!

Looks like I was wrong.  If I had it to do over I would've looked at the crane closer with my headset magnifier.   Maybe I could've seen that it was stuck in there.

Just got this from Keith."Your bolt was not resetting because the
bolt plunger spring had rusted inside of the crane allowing the cylinder to
rotate freely."

Thanks,

At least it won't be an expensive repair!  Well, not that expensive, at least...

Hope you have fun shooting, when you get it back.

I live in Bowling Green and have owned 2 mod 15's and did all my own spring work, a real easy gun to work on.  I've got a 357SM now and still do the spring work and internal cleaning; the SM's are much harder to get back together, sometimes it takes 3 hands.

When Priscilla called me she said the repair would take 3-4 weeks.   They've only got 1 Smith, and numerous guns ahead of me.

Thanks for your replies!

I recently sent a 744 into Keith and team and I believe I had it back in less than two weeks.

They always give a longer date so that they don't have to call back if there are any surprises.  They still do excellent work.  I had to send my 1st Monson gun back to the Monson plant and got a call from the smith when he got to it and he detailed the problem and approximate fix time.  When I 1st got my SM, it had a lock-up problem so I sent it to the Norwich plant and I got the same type of call, with a detailed description of the problem.  Good luck and enjoy your DW, I sure regret selling my model 15's.  I definitely won't sell my SM.Range Time

I didn't see SM in the acronyms here.   Are you talking about S&W?   And, if you are, I didn't know Norwich worked om S&W's?

I think they probably try to "under promise and over deliver" on work timeframes. I'd also suggest that they might be busy now, making sure they are ready for the SHOT Show, where they will unveil new models, display the full model line-up, have a bunch of stuff ready for the press, etc.

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

What's "SHOT" Show , can you expound on this?   They're not making DW Revolvers any more, are they?

SHOT Show is the big industry trade show in January:

http://www.shotshow.org/

Probably no revolvers, but DW's reputation as a top quality 1911 manufacturer puts them just a small step below custom manufacturers/builders.

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Does CZ-USA still produce the 1911's like the one pictured in your post?   I assume you have one of them?    How much do they sell for?    A better question is,  Can you fill me in on them?

Thanks,
