I was looking at a revolver this past weekend that had .38 special on the 4 inch shroud but didn't have adjustable sights. I was thinking that it was probably a 357 with a 38 shroud. I didn't try to chamber a 357 round into the cylinder though. DID DW make a solid rear sight 38? Looked like a model 14 to me. Even the bluing was a little different. Thoughts? Are they uber-rare?

Yes, that would be a model 8. The model 8 is a .38 Spl service revolver, with fixed rear sights & a matte blue finish.
Both these models are relatively rare, but not as rare as some. No matter what, if you have the chance to grab a clean example for a good price, DO IT! You won't be sorry.

The guys have you covered. If you go after one be sure it's not a 15 or 14 with a 38 shroud. It will still work but it won't be what you think you have. If a 357 cartridge will chamber it's not a 8 or a 9.
