Hi guys, I just changed the grip on my model 15 from the original pachmyer grip to the slightly smaller houge rubber grip which fits my hand better, and upon reassembly I can not bring the hammer back to lock up in single action. It works normal in double action????? Did I possibly bend or break the mainspring or the mainspring guide? I then put the pachmyer back on and the hammer will still not stay back when manually cocking in single action but, works normal in DA. I just received this back from Norwich a few months ago and have since fired about 50 rounds. Worked and felt great. They replaced all springs and brought back to factory specs. Any input or thoughts appreciated.

Just guessing, it does sound like the spring guide is bent. I would think you could re-straighten it, though.
I wonder if the Hogue grip requires a shorter screw, like a couple of the alternate DW grips do? Are the Hogue's new or used?
Wait for some other opinions on the matter, because I'm not positive.

The hogue grip is new. I found it at Midway. I just replaced the grip on my other model 15 last month with the same. I used the old screw on that one and it functions perfectly. They do not come with a new screw. I ordered this one because the place I bought the last one from only had one. It was new old stock. Funny it was very dusty sitting on the peg board. I joked to the owner about this and how I was doing him a favor by removing this from his display dust and all... He discounted it five bucks. I paid 14$. Since I liked the way it fit my hand better I thought I would get another one for my 2nd mod 15. Thanks for the reply. I will wait to see if anyone else chimes in.

Joe- If the Hogue grip is the finger groove/combat style one, I have swapped one on and off two different 15's and a 715 with no problem. If the Pachmayr you refer to is the large presentation model, I also have had that grip on and off all three pistols without a problem. Unfortunately, there can be some problems that come from grip screw length, but that should not have ocurred here unless the new grip is dimensioned differently from the NOS one. Perhaps you could devise a way to measure the depth of the grip screw hole in each grip to see if the screw can extend further into one than the other. Since you just had work done on it, I suppose there is a possibility (?) that the work involved parts that are slightly different than original, or were not installed correctly. I do know that there are some posts buried here on DWF that discuss this problem, I just don't remember where.
Good Luck, a broke gun is no fun.

edit: if you look here

you will find more about grips. There is a post showing about 12 different grips, including two similar but slightly different Pachmayr Target Grips
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

JoeBuzz,
I had the exact same problem when I recently installed a Hogue on my 7445. As everyone has said, the screw is too long. As I backed out a couple of turns, I noticed the hammer would move further back until both single and double action would work properly- I am not convinced at this point that the grip is secure. I am probably going back with wood simply because I knew when the screw was tight enough and everything worked as it should. I have no desire to shoot the 445 with the question, "is the grip screw tight enough" floating around in my mind.
It does seem strange that putting the original grip back on didn't solve your problem though. As YungJosh said, if it works normally with no grip, you shouldn't have any damage.

Thanks all for your input. The problem happens now with the grip screw completely out. Even after putting on the original grips (tried the wood ones also) it still will not lock back in single action. So I ripped it apart and as far as I can see the sear is not engaging where its supposed too. Maybe a few hundreds short.?????? No springs are broken or bent. As luck would have it I was able to compare it to my other model 15 side by side. I cannot see any differences. I did notice that the new Hogue grip allowed the screw to travel much further into the grip tang than its predecesor on my other 15. So the question is If you screw it in too much can you bend something like the hand, strut, etc that will not allow the sear to engage single action?? I guess a call to CZ/DW is in order for today. Thanks for all your input. This site & its members are a wonderfull resource.

Hi, Alls well that ends well. Keith from DW said its a most overlooked problem. The screw was not going in straight and I was actually turning the mainspring seat. Seems the mainspring seat was turning further up into the square butt of the gun. he suggested I remove, degrease & locktite into place. Problem Solved. Thanks again all for your input.
