So with my new monson 44, I was wondering if it is ok to dry fire them. I noticed that "odd" firing mechanism and kinda thought that it may not be good for it.

And can someone explain the small piece of metal that engages when the hammer is pulled back? I figured it was a safety design and found it fascinating.

Dry fire is fine, and you are probably seeing what Dan Wesson refers to as the "safety connector".

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Cool. I was worried that maybe the metal tab wouldn't hold up or that it may damage the firing pin. I did find it an interesting design that seems so simple yet very effective.

On another note, got my barrel wrench and feeler gage from EWK today. Shooting day is Easter Sunday.

Unfortunately no. Closed season on bunnies. Otherwise I wouldn't be able to guarantee anything.

That little tab of metal is also called a transfer bar and used by many

firearms manufactures, example: Ruger, Freedom Arms , Taurus ect.

What Blacktop said.  The only thing he left off is that the transfer bar safety is a 118 year old design, as it first appeared on Iver Johnson Revolvers in I believe 1894.  (proven technology by this point)

Well all be damned. I guess my lack of revolver and handgun experience is showing a little bit. Lol. I've always been a long gun shooter so some of these things are quite new to me. Thanks guys

NVGdude, thanks for sharing that information.  As I was reading all the post in this thread I was wondering who used it first.
