maximumload said:I have a Marlin 444 SS with the ballard rifling that has those hideous tool marks. I started looking around and found Bear Tooth Bullets. They have some wild bullets and loadings. But in that article they said to fire lap the bore. They also sell kits to do this. As I have never tried this I do not know if it is all B.S. or not, But they sell these kits for most calibers if anybody wants to try it.
GunSmith said something about a compound you dip your lead bullets in before you shoot them. I thought maybe I would run 100 leads, Then run 100 leads with compound to see if really makes a difference.

I like the feel of those grips, bu they do wear ugly. They are plastic, not sure what to do to cover up the wear. I thought about trying to stain a set.
SHOOT
I totally agree with the feel , but uhh...the color... Well since SHOOT has obviously
cornered the market on DW's maybe he will sell me a set of grips !

Fire lapping is something that very serious competition shooters used to (still?) do to break in a barrel. Kits are available for this, but if it ain't broke, why fix it? Just keep shooting it
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

I sent hours reading about fire lapping last night, seem's to be a 50/50 debate. Some swear by it, some think that it wears the throat and lands. Most agree just shooting a few hundred rounds of lead will smooth things out. Now I will just have to tell that I have to buy 500 rnds to fix this problem.

OK, so I ran 100 rnds through it this evening, cleaned bore and I think I can see a very small improvement, barrel definatly shows more shine. Groups got tighter on second box. I would have shot more but I was in 10in snow, 26 degree's and 15-20 mph cross wind and forgot gloves I bought some Fed-American Eagle 158grn 38spl LRN at local Gun/pawn. I know I have used Fed-AE before but these have to be the most beatup looking bullets I have seen in a while. Reminds me of a coffee can of conical bullets my grand dad use to keep for the muzzle pipe. I hope the Ammo dosen't get as bad as the lumber you get these days.
I will try to get another 200 through this weekend and post a pic.

If ammo gets that bad we will be able to shoot around corners.

Check Ebay for grips, it's one of the few things they still allow gunwise. For polishing up the bore, I highly reccomend Veral Smith's kit, look up Lead Bullet Technologies. His kit is composed of soft lead slugs that you use to check the smoothness of the bore and to gauge the bore if you have calipers, then a lapping compound that you apply to your own cast bullest and a light powder charge, he has very detailed instructions. The kit has enough slugs that you can check the bore after 20 or so rounds and as often as needed to get a smooth pass through. I've used the kit on all my guns, even my b/p ones after it improved my DW's accuracy. It worked equally well on all guns and drastically improved the accuracy on most and made an improvement on the rest.

Thanks Rob, Not sure I am ready to fire lap just yet. I have read alot about guy's like your self who swear by it. I guess I am leaning towards old school way of, how you'd say "using elbow greese" by running alot of lead through it. I know barrel break'in is a big debate but I really think it has made an improvement. Gunsmith said a 1000rnds to get the bore looking pefect, but I will wait for better weather and a ammo deal on the next 500.

I'd rather "shoot in" a pistol if I can. I have a S&W M&P that I was going to have some action work on, instead I put about 1000 rounds thru it and everything settled right in.
If you haven't done so yet, pull the sideplate off that 15-2, clean and lube everything, and you'll be amazed at how much nicer it gets

Thanks Steve,
Pulled sideplate, looks really clean, shot a little rem oil in there and seemed to slick it up a bit.

"Shooting in" a firearm has more than one good result. First it is just plain fun. But not only are you shooting in the gun you are shooting in your self. Grip, trigger squeeze, sight pic, breathing, and all the other stuff. There is no substitute for pratice.
