Good morning
I am wondering if there is any interest amongst the 41 mag DW shooters in the possibility of having EWK do a special run of 8" .41 mag 1-14 twist barrels for heavy lead bullet shooting. I would not be oppossed dramaticly to a 1-16 twist. I picked 8" length due to me preference in using my 8" barrel hunting.
Why ?? Well a 265 grainer will shoot accurately with a large compressed dose of 296 (H110). But start dropping the FPS to lets say 1000 fps then the 1-18 twist is too slow to really stabalise heavy bullets. There is little need to pop a whitetail or piggy with a 265 or heavier cast bullet at 1350 FPS. A 265 or heavier bullet at 1000 fps will go through most any vege eater from all but the "grill door" shot on large whitetails & larger beasties. Then there is also the 280 grainers + that are great to smack big hogs & other nasty critters with.
So what is your imput ? Any Interest ?
Mike

I may be in, but from what I can tell: a one inch long, .410, 265 gr. bullet should stabilize in a 1:18.75" twist, even at 900 fps. Of course, I'm not certain how long the bullet actually is- just guessing.

Hope all is well in Peru!

Technically, the glass is always full; half liquid, half air....

Neat tool...
put the length to 1.5 inches and its all the difference in the world!!! I dont know how long a .41 @ 265gr is.. but bullet lenght is EVERYTHING.. At 1.5" the best twist is 14.
Soap Box, Ballot Box, Ammo Box
in that order.

You can buy barrel blanks in 41 mag with 14:1 twist send them to eric to turn down and thread.Name of company GREEN MOUNTAIN barrel co.
Walt--you beat me to it ...
Not that EWK wouldn't make a 41 barrel, however.... it would be cost prohibitive for him to do so for a limited quantity. He would have to purchase a 41 gun drill, plus a rifling button. This alone, plus set-up would push the final product cost higher than most would pay.

Good afternoon Thanks everyone for the imput.. I have already considered the private purchase route and getting the machine work done. I wrote Erik complimenting him i¡on his great looking DW accessories and so started the possible .41 fast twist barrel communication with him. So I thought why not see if there was any real interest beyond me & my flurry into heavy cast bullets. I eventually have the goal of getting 300 grainers to accurately fire out to 100 yards. With a 2x scope it should be a dandy rig for popping large corn crunchers and piggies who just do not want to get closer.
But that is where this all comes from. Mike

Having some further commo with EWK he may be headed into the project in future months. I will keep you fellow DW shooters posted as I know more.
One thing for sure.. I will one day have a 1-14 twist (maybe also a 1-16 ) twist 8" barrel and will happily be launching heavy cast boolits at easy to reach velocities. Keep-em smoking... the corn crunchers are getting bigger.

Greetings Have had some good commo with EWK. May be a future project as he has showed interest. But if my worst case senario is buy a 1-14 twist blank I will get a long one and have made as many as possible in 41 mag (8" & 6") & at least one in 414 SM 8".
It takes a good case full of 1680 to get a 265 GC moving fast enough to hold stable out to 100 meters in 41 mag. I did not crono the load that was the most accurate as it was late November in Illinois and very windy & cold. What I am looking for is to stabalise 280 grainers at 1200 fps. This would duplicate the old BP 40-60 loads that were more than sufficient for big crtters. If more FPS is possible sainly that would only be a plus.

SAAMI specs o.k.
Six groves would be fine.
Carbon steel in my opinion (I can't seem to get it out of my mind but I'm still leery on the s/s to s/s contact with galling). Besides carbon steel on stainless still works and one can cover it up with the shrout.
A special request: can you make shrouds for the large frames? Thanks! DW41F.
