Have a friend who is interested in doing a trade after we went thru the backs of each others safes. He has a 455 Super Mag and its serial number is ETG455B0xx. The gun is marked as:
DAN WESSON ARMS
MONSON, MASS, U.S.A.
Was reading a John Taffin article on "The Supermags" and he indicated, "The first guns had oversize cylinders....". Checked the serial number information on the site, but only found one blued 455 SM listed but it did not have the "B" in the serial number, believe it was serial number ETG455099.
Would this gun with ETG455B0xx be one of the early ones with the oversized cylinder bore issue, or am I safe? The gun only had about 20 rounds thru it, and it have a 10" vented V shroud.
Also what would a "fair" price for such a gun be. I'm interested in it as a shooter and not a collector.
Thanks much!

Can you shoot the gun before doing the trade? That will tell you a lot about it. You could also measure the chambers to see how they compare with spec.
Personally, the ETG guns are fairly rare and command a higher price on auction than the same gun without the ETG prefix. The B simply indicates that it is a blued gun. If I were being offered this gun on a trade, I'd grab it for the reasons I mentioned. As to value, that has a lot to do with condition, accessories if any, your part of the country, and even time of year. A WAG for just the gun would be $1000-$1250+/-. Those values would be auction values and it could bring substantially more, or less. JMHO.
What are you offering as trade fodder? Maybe you two could do an even up trade?
Good luck and post a pic if you get it.

You might try contacting Randy Gates via the Dan Wesson Fan Club on Facebook. The Gates Family has a lot of historical information on the Elgin T. Gates/Dan Wesson SuperMags.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

I checked my 445. It is a ETG445S104. I am guessing it is an older superman. As you see it does not start with a 7 for stainless and it is stainless. Also ETG seems to be a key thing for an older gun. I have been shooting this gun for years and I do not seem to have any problems with the cylinder. When I purchased the gun it came with ETG brass. I did have a problem sizing this brass. I also had star line brass which I never have a problem sizing. I am not sure if this helps ease your Mind about the gun you are looking at. Can anyone tell me if my assumptions about my gun being one of the first is correct.

The "7" for stainless would not be part of the Serial Number, the "S" following ETG445 would indicate stainless. The S/N's known for 7445's are generally in the 1990-92 range.
