I recently saw a DW .44Mag SS (Monson) at a local gun store. It had the box, sleeve (with oil marks), manual, extra barrel, wood DW wood grips (very good condition) on it, and Pachmayr grips. The bore was shiny, but the shroud had a long scratch (not deep) on the left side. When the cylinder was closed and the hammer down, I could rotate it backwards.  The guy at the store said the cylinder stop probably needs replacing. He offered to have a gunsmith do the job. Price of the gun: $1000.

A big welcome to the DWF!  1000 puts you on the high end of prices I've seen lately The scratch is strike one. Cylinder function is strike two. I think you could do better taking your chances on GB or wait for a local source that you can lay hands on. IMHO pass on it.

I tend to agree with ParaNormal. For $1000.00, I would be looking for pretty much unblemished, but that's just me. Unless you are looking to flip it, at the end of the day it's a good deal for you if it's what you are looking for and the price fits your budget.

Welcome to the DWF!

To the paranoid people who check behind shower curtains for murderers:

if you find one...what's your plan?

Agree with the above…..you could do better searching some more. Not sure what the dealer meant by cylinder stop, perhaps he meant bolt? Cylinder stop has nothing to do with lock up.

Being stainless, you can polish out minor scratches without much trouble.

Welcome, and good luck with your choice.

Thanks for the input. I took another look at the gun yesterday. Instead of an extra barrel, it comes with an Aimpoint 3000 scope & rail. I also think $1000 is a bit much considering the strikes.

I stopped back at the gun store and the 44mag is at a local gunsmith to have the cylinder movement fixed. IMHO, they should have thoroughly inspected the functioning of the gun before putting it on the shelf for sale. Maybe they were hoping nobody would notice.

Seems not that unusual. Bought a 44 DW recently with a bent crane and a cylinder gap three times over recommended……no one seemed concerned. You'd think with liability issues these days they might be…..obviously not.
