I kind of know the answer to this question, but I want you guys input. I purchased this DW that was sold as a model 9. It has a 38 CTG shroud and has a new looking barrel. However it chambers a 357 mag. with no problem. So I feel this is a mod. 15. The cylinder length is the same as my .357 mag cylinder length. Note also that this cylinder holds 6 rounds. My other .38s hold only 5 rounds. How many rounds does the model 9 hold? I'm trying to understand why they put a 38 CTG shroud on the 15 frame?. It came in a box that is marked as a mod. 9 with the correct s/n. I told the gun store to call the guy up and see if he accidentally mixed up the frames. No response yet.
Those of you that have a model 9, is the cylinder a regular .38 spl length cylinder, ie.; it wont accept a .357 CTG. And how many cartridges does it hold? You know its really hard to find any information on the Mod. 9. I really like the pistol, but I don't need another mod. 15 frame. The .38 ctg shroud is the same size as the .357 mag shrouds. What do you guys think I should do. Here are a couple of pics. Oh! Does anyone have a model 9 .38 frame they would part with?

My vote is for a 15-2 with a .38 shroud and some pretty clear Magic Marker editing to make it a Model 9. If it chambers .357 (and with that S/N, I think) it's a 15-2.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

I would assume that either the cylinder or shroud has been changed at some point, my money is on the shroud. I don't recall if model 9's had a box label that was "model 9 specific", maybe Shoot can answer that one.
The only 5-shot .38 that DW made was the Lil Dan, the model 738P. All others were 6-shot. If you want to make an official model 9, you could send it to DW & have them make you a .38 cylinder for it. Perfecto!

E-mail sent -- it appears you have a 15-2 with a model 9 shroud. I can hook you up with a 15-2 shoud in exchange.
I think I'm the only model 9 on the forum.

Thanks for the input Shoot. I noted you said, "The model 9 holds 6 ctg too." Thats interesting. Next question: Just curious, Are the dimensions of the 38 cyl the same as the 357 cal. cylinder ie.; the length and O.D. diameter of the cylinder? Meaning only the cylinder chamber holes are cut to a .38 cal.?
I tried to check the archives on DWF. I couldn't find anything on the model 8 or 9. Even the Internet doesn't tell you anything about the model 8 or 9. I'm still waiting on a reply from the gun shop about the owner. I am hoping he mixed the frames up, but I kind of doubt it. If I traded the shroud/barrel I would like to put it toward a 6" or 8" EH Shroud/barrel. Thanks again Shoot.

Without having one of each in hand to measure, I would guess that the dimension of the cylinder is the same, the chambers have probably been reamed differently.

The model 8 & 9 cylinders should measure the same as the 15-2 on the outside, the only difference should be the final reamed depth as Steve stated. I've got a pair of Porkchop model 14's…the top one in the first pic is .38 Spl & the other is .357 Mag, these were available back then as the same model with no differentiation of actual model names. Here's a BIGGER shot of the first one.
And trust me, the .38 gun will only chamber a .38 Spl round because it's chambers are not reamed (bored) as deep as the .357 Mag cylinder. On the outside, they look identical.

Thanks for the information Charger. I'm really getting an education on the model 8 an 9. I had showed it to L.B. and he thought the same thing. I was talking to L.B. this morning and we talked about the DWF. This forum is probably the only repository of extensive DW history and archives out there. And what a great bunch of guys we have here. Thanks to all that helped answer my question. This is another golden nugget of information for the books.
