Guys, the W12 was only available in 3 barrel lengths. The 8" didn't come along until around 1976, with the introduction of the 15-2, at least 6 years after the W12 model.
For example, here is (one of my own) W12 Pistol Pac's that were offered. This one is from the first year, 1970...meet Ed!
And This is Ed with his sequentially numbered brother Fred. These are 2-digit guns, from the earliest days/month of DW production.

I think I can help with some of the serial number questions on the Model 12. I found this my dads notes yesterday. This is what is says.
"The first production guns were shipped on August 13, 1970. During 1970 the serial numbers were under the grip until serial number 3225. The serial numbers were then stamped inside the crane area, until 1973. In 1973 the serial numbers were stamped on the right hand side of the frame starting with the serial number 25,000. All serial numbers, since that time are stamped in the same place."
I hope this can help.
Best regards

This thread is from 2014 Dave ...
After looking and thinking a little more. This is where the new member asked the question that I replied to. What I said makes no sence otherwise. SCORPIO relocated the new member but not me. No big deal, but was confusing.
