Hi everyone. I'm new to the DW Forum site and am wading through the oceans of information, so please bear with me if this issue was covered already. I'll apologize beforehand for not having pictures yet.
I recently purchased a DW Pistol Pack; all the components are in excellent condition. It contains a Monson-made gun (serial #10511x) with all 4 barrels (8", 6", 4", and 2.5") which are all partial underlug, 3 wooden grips, barrel tools (including .006 gauge, allen wrenches, barrel wrenches, including a .22 cal tool), and the case. It did not have any original paperwork with it nor any extra front sights. The gun and all barrels appear to have been shot very little; all barrels have the DAN WESSON ARMS 357 MAGNUM CTG stamping on them.
There appear to be some inconsistencies with the pack. I realize contents varied over the years but: 1) the barrel tools are in an EWK packet instead of being Dan Wesson, 2) the 8" barrel does not have a vent rib, the others do, 3) the case had no DW label on it (which easily could have come off over the years), 4) all parts had protective brown wrapping, but it appears to be generic instead of factory except around the gun which has Smith & Wesson paper, 5) the extra barrels have rubber bands around the threading.
The barrel tools seem to be very good quality. Maybe I'm being too picky with some of the issues, but I guess my main concern is the 8" barrel not being vented when the others are. And what would the rubber bands have been used for other than to maybe protect the threading?
I will be grateful for any information on these issues. Thanks much.

Welcome to DWF. It sounds like you have a Pack that has been filled in with some stuff.
The EWK tool would not ever have been original, the .22 barrel tool obviously has no place in a .357 Pack, 3 grips does not sound right, one mismatched B/A ...
Any original barrel wrapper would probably be marked Ludlow, MA
Pictures help, but again

It could have been pieced together, but that doesn't matter. If all the shrouds are marked the same they all originated in the same place. Or the the 8" barrel could have been damaged and replaced with a non-vr barrel. The S&W vapor paper doesn't belong there - I'd take it out and put it around a S&W gun if you have one. THe label is no big deal - most of the packs out there don't have the label anymore. The rubber bands around the barrel threads (not original to the pack) are to hold the barrel in the shrouds and prevent it from sliding out. This is one of the first lessons I learned on my first pack...I picked up one of the barrel assy's. and the barrel came sliding out of the shroud, crashed into another shroud and dinged it. Ever since then I put a tight fitting o-ring on on the barrel threads and holds the barrel in the shroud.
I wouldn't fret about the the particulars of the pack..pick up some original tools and eventually find an 8" BR barrel to match it up. However, though, if the seller presented it as an all original pack then I'd be a bit irritated do to the misrepresentation.
Post up some pics so we can see what you got there.

Hello,
The word PAC is thrown around very freely on auction sites. IMHO...... This probably was a gun that the owner added items according to his personal taste and budget. The rubber bands are to keep the barrel inside the shroud and not slide out. Many use zip ties to do the same function. The paper is to keep the items from getting damaged in transit. The recess in the foam doesnt hold the BAs well when faced with normal shipping procedures. Enjoy your purchase and you will probably be adding items of your own. It is called DWAS and it is spreading faster than a monkey virus

Welcome to the forum. From the sounds of it maybe it is an original pac with some nonoriginal items. The original barrel tool could have been broken or lost and replaced with the much superior EWK tool. The label on the case is often missing. And I personally put rubber o-rings on the threaded end of all my small frame barrel assemblies to keep the barrel from sliding out when they are picked up. The barrels all should probably match but you could hunt down a vented 8" and replace the mismatched one. From the sounds of it you could gather everything to make your pac correct, we can see better when you get some pics up. I own one pistol pac and it is not completely correct but it is MY pac and I am very happy with it.

Thanks everyone; I appreciate your input. Guess maybe I'm fretting over some small stuff (other than the 8" unmatched B/A). I went ga-ga when I saw the condition of the bluing, wood grips, and the bores; guess I missed some obvious signs of un-originality.
I'll give everything a thorough cleaning and take it to the range.
For hugelk: I'm not familiar with DWAS?

Yep take it to the range! And having everything in such nice condition helps a lot, remember these guns are 30+ years old! It is not hard to add the missing items and the hunt for stuff can be fun.

Thanks again everyone; all your input is well taken. In the meantime I've contacted the store where I purchased the pac and they offered a full refund if I'm not happy with it. However, all the positive comments are making me reconsider returning it. The condition is really exceptional for the age, and I will get around to posting pictures in the next day or two.

Thanks, Hugelk for the tip; I'll check out the shroud on gunsamerica. Went to the Chantilly gun show yesterday; no luck on parts there.
Dumb question time: Should all 15-2 models have a partial cock hammer safety position? If so, mine does not , which raises another issue.

Thanks to ese927 for the re-sizing tip. Finally a picture of the whole pack. The flip sides look just as nice as the shown sides. I cleaned everything and there was next to no residue of any kind that came off on the patches. Bores are in excellent condition and no scratches whatsoever on the grips.
No safety. You are fine. There is single and double action. A transfer bar prevents the hammer from striking the firing pin unless the trigger is pulled.
You have gotten a lot of good advise. Read the forum daily till you have read it all.lol. Then you will be able to take apart and fix almost anything. Yoy will know what your next model will be too. Do not take it back. My first Dan my wife said I spent to much. Two years later the 12" barrel assembly is worth more than the gun and other two barrels.
Buy an unexpensive Houge Finger groove grip on ebay to give yourself options and avoid wear and tear on your nicest wood grips. Have fun with your FIRST Dan Wesson.HaHaHa.
