Forum-Photo-2.jpg

I was "grazing" in my favorite gun shop recently when another customer told me about a friend who had a Dan Wesson 44 for sale. Naturally I had to ask for his friend's phone number and DWAS took its natural course leading to this Pac. Price was $625; Serial Number SB004167.

My seller said he took it in trade 5 years ago and never fired it due to a problem with his wrist. Hurricane Isaac has kept me from the range, but that will change soon.

The cloth on the bottom of the case is not original according to the seller, but the cloth on the lid does appear to be original. The foam cutouts appear correct, but there is none for the extra 8" power control barrel. I also noticed that the buckle is inscribed on the back with ".357 Magnum" and the year 1979. I'm wondering if this would be the correct buckle for a 744 Pac? I could not find a label on the case that would verify it is an "original" pac. Regardless, I think it was well worth the money paid.

Now I'm up to 6 DW's - 3 15-2's, including a very early pac and a 715 VH6; and 3 44's including this 744 Pac. The best part is my wife was in on every purchase except 1 and the 44 is her favorite shooter!  big-grin

Snake-eye, I'd say you got a good deal on the 744 PAC. I like the grip from what I can see. Maybe you could post some more cool-pics so we can see more of the new addition to your family.

Was the PAC still smoking when you got it, a price like that for a 744 pac is amazing today.  I've seen just 44 revolvers go for that on the auction sites.  You done very good.  I've seen buckles with 357max and 44mag on the back, but I've also seen complete pac's of a 44 and a 445SM at gun shows that were untouched and complete with a 357mag buckle, so I guess it depends on who put the pac together at the factory and what was available at the time.cool-picsdwf

I'll try to get some more pictures tomorrow.

I'm not sure about the grip myself. It sort of looks like Zebra, but then again it doesn't. I'm not a wood expert, so I don't know what else it could be.

I do like it though!

Need a better pic of the grip, but it looks like Pao Farro, a rainforrest hardwood, with a widely varied color pattern from stripes to blotches.  The wood is very hard around the hardness of walnut.  I had a reddish stained walnut grip that came with my 357SM and after removing the finish and clearcoating, it was quite nice.

Nice .44 Pac you found and at a great price.  I could be wrong and others may need to chime in, but I am not aware of any other woods that DW used throughout the years other than the Zebrawood and Walnut.
