The extractor rod should unscrew from the star. Put a small block of wood on either side of the rod & clamp it in a vise, then unscrew the cylinder & star from the rod. Once you've unscrewed it about one revolution, you can unclamp the rod & do it by hand.
Here's an exploded view...

I'll have to look at mine when i get home, but CF is dead on-- it should unscrew from the star. Also, put two or 3 empty cases in the chamber before you try to unscrew it....this supports the star to unscrew it. I never noticed a Torx type fitting on mine, but I'll look.

kevenn said:I figured the rod unscrewed, mine is a little bent, not bad. What about the actual star istself? I'm able to pull the star right off with some pressure, it looks like the star is just pushed on the extractor rod, the end is a torx type end...is that normal?
If I'm reading you right, you're saying that the star is slipping down the shaft like this?
If so, then no...that isn't supposed to do that & it needs fixing.
I haven't seen any torx ends on these, but I do have a couple that look slightly like an allen style hole. I don't know if that was intentional, or not...I haven't heard of any mention of that area yet, as something that would require a tool.

Chargerfan those are great picts! It looks like you have a stop at the end next to your star so it can't come off...mine doesn't have that! It must have broke of so I need that assembly. If you look at the one picture you sent beneath the stop there are ridges (torx like) grooves to keep the start secure, that was what I was looking at. Anyone know where I can get another rod/star extractor? It looks like DW wants the gun to be sent in to be fixed.

I looked when I got home and my star extractor is different, it looks like I never had a stop at the end to begin with. I doesn't look like it broke off or anything like that. My picts are bad but you'll see what I mean...anybody with an older Monson DW to compare?[Image Can Not Be Found][Image Can Not Be Found]

Holy Jeepers, those are some big pics! Anyway...
Ok, the pics I showed above, are of my Model 15 (small frame). I posted those as a general reference pic, because that's all I had right then...that's why it looks different than yours. Sorry about that.
Yours is the first I've seen of a separated star & shaft. It's definitely broken, but I bet a smith could fix it fairly easily. It's probably just a broken weld, I imagine.
Here's pics of my .375 SuperMag because they turned out clearer (this part looks the same as the .357).

BTW, is this part circled the "torx" part you've been mentioning?

Charger thanks for the responses! I obviously feel better about my revolver now that I know everyone has similar "quirks" on their DW as I do...It's just a different revolver that I'm not used to.
The torx end I'm talking about is at the end of the naked rod in my 1st picture (the one w/o the star) I could try to epoxy it. However I think I might just try and find a used/new one. I've tried contacting Genny/Keith at DW 3x and I haven't gotten a response...I would just need the extractor and I think I'll order a new ejector rod to since mine is a little bend. I didn't find anyone selling parts in the DW classifieds like someone else posted...any thoughts??

Also--based on these pics, 40'S EJECTOR RODS DO NOT UNSCREW!!!. We should post this as as a sticky somewhere about the ejector rod. That Torx you are mentioning is an interference fit from the factory. It was probably pressed together. Youn can attempt to peen the rod a little and use some red loc-tite, but it probably won't work. A REALLY good TIG welder may be able to hit the top by the star, but once it is together, that's it!
