I've seen "full lug" barrels where the lug goes all the way to the end and is squared off. Others go all the way to the end but for a very slight 45 degree cut. Others are clearly "half lug" going only part of the way down the barrel.
There are then the "heavy" barrels, which I assume are the full lug barrels, but perhaps not. There is a rib, vented rib and no rib on the top.
So, what qualifies as "full lug" or heavy barrel or both? Are they synonymous? Is the one where the lug does not square off also a "full lug" or "heavy barrel"?

So, from reading one of the stickies, this is my conclusion.
"full lug" and "heavy barrel" are synonymous. At some point for some reason the "full lug" was angled. I don't know if that was early or late or random.
There is no "no rib", there is vent or solid ribbed.
Anyone know when the full lug changed?

For a Dan Wesson, the VH (Vent Heavy) barrel has the full length underlug squared at the muzzle, I have also seen some Pistol Packs where the 2 1/2" barrel appears to be undercut at 45 degrees.
The H (Heavy) barrel has the full length underlug squared at the muzzle and no vented top rib. These seem to be the least common configuration made.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

As Steve mentioned the 2 1/2 in barrels with a "cut" (we will use your term) are in fact the
the non-lug shroud for a pistol pack. If you look at any true all original full lug pistol pack, the
2 1/2 inch shroud will not have the "cut" as you mentioned. If you look at a true non-lug set
you will see the "cut" on the 2 1/2 inch shroud of the set.
If you see any Dan Wesson with longer than 2 1/2 shroud and it has a "cut" then most
likely it is a fixed barrel model and most likely made at the Palmer plant.

No rib on the top clearly makes this shroud a 14/714 shroud, for a gun with fixed sights.

Agreed. That makes it pretty easy to spot an incorrect Pac, IMO.
