I put a deposit on a 357 4 barrel pack today, $699 but in like new condition. I bet it was never shot and has the heavy shroud on the 8, 6 and 2. the 4 has the lighter one. all wrappers and paperwork is also included.
But......the trigger is the worse pull, single and double action i have ever felt on a revolver. Makes a Taurus feel smoooth.
Any idea how to make this shootable or can recomend a good smith who works and knows DW's?
Thanks

First of all…. It sounds like you got a great deal on your DW. Please stop in the new members section and tell us a little about yourself. I wonder why the 4″ barrel is different though. We'll like to take a peek at your new purchase so, … We are picture junkies here!
As far as the trigger is concerned, the single action pull shoud be quite light and smooth. The double pull leaves a little to be desired. It will smooth out a little once you start shooting it. Unfortunately, there are no longer any dedicated DW smiths out there, so you will need to learn to work on your own guns. CZ-USA will still do repair work if you have a serious problem. I assume this is a Pistol Pak and included the case?

If the gun has been a safe queen, it may have a bunch of stiff old lube in it...I've bought a couple guns like that. Once I took them apart & gave them a good scrubbing, the action felt much better.
Plus as SHOOT said, after you shoot the gun a bunch, the parts will loosen up. Sort of like a new pair of boots...a little stiff at first.

Grant Cunningham was the only active DW I know of, and he stopped working on them over a year ago. Believe me, if you find an active DW smith, a lot of people around here will be interested

If your barrels don't match, I think it is very unlikely that this pack is original as it stands now, almost certain that the 4" is not original, possibly not the revolver. Is there a S/N tag on the case? That said, you probably still got a very good deal.
DW revolver trigger pull can be sensitive to correct grip screw length, and as said, more than one person has found that a thorough cleaning inside the sideplate fixes a lot of problems.
My local gunsmith works on DW revolvers, and has done good work for me. He is basically the top local 1911/AR/Glock guy in the state. If you look for the same type guy in your area and talk to him, you might be surprised. DW's are not that tough for a competent gunsmith.
BTW-anything that makes a Taurus feel smooth is frightening.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

I'm pretty sure it is a pistol pack. everything even inserts are in the envelope and never opened. same with the guage and wrench. I'm betting it has never been shot. the case is clean with no powder marking that you see if someone actualy uses the case.
just pulling the hammer back is hard to do and the same with the double action, VERY difficult to do.
Again, i won't have the gun for several weeks till my permit goes through.
I'm used to a m-14 k-38 that's worked. i know this will never be as nice as that but i would like a 3lb trigger if nothing else. I looked quickly iat brownells online and didn't see a spring kit for it. any idea where to get one?
Thanks again, cas

First !
Take a look at the (right) side of the PP case. There should be a label there. It will have the SN of the gun and the barrels included will be checked off. If the sticker isn't there, or there are things that don't match, then it's a "built" PP rather than a factory packed PP. There's nothing wrong with that, most of us who have PP's built them.
My 2 original Dan's, a 715 and a 744, were purchased alone, then a couple of months later I bought the PP cases for them and eventually all of the barrels, the patch and buckle.
Regarding the excessive trigger pull; have you checked the headspace gap with the provided gauge? It may be just set too tight. Just a thought.
Spring kits are available from DW for $29.00.
Again, welcome, and don't forget the .

This sounds weird... I've got more than a few DW's and none of them are VERY hard to pull back (or even hard for that matter). I'd start by backing out the grip screw and checking how it feels, then move on to setting your BC gap to make sure it is correct (hell, just take and back the barrel out). If neither of these seem to help, you'll have to open her up and start cleaning.

A couple years ago a friend of a friend offered to sell me--for $50, as a parts gun--a Model 65 Smith that had an action similar to yours. I bought it of course. After spraying a can of brake cleaner through the action, it was fine. I cleaned it up afterwards of course.
If your barrel/cylinder gap checks out, you might try this. If it improves, tear it down and clean it up. If not, I guess a gunsmith trip is in order. Good luck!

On the stiff action topic, I've had two DW's that were stiff. My 15 PP gun had been fired a lot & was filthy when I got it...very obvious that it hadn't been cleaned in a long time. The latest Porkchop Model 15, had been carried a bunch, but not fired much.
Both guns' actions were stiff & both felt like the serrated hammer spurs could possibly remove skin when cocking. The first gun was badly gunked up inside & felt like butter after a good scrubbing...now it's almost too loose. The second gun was clean inside, but bone dry & things were not sliding very well. After cleaning & lube, it still feels mildly stiff, but not near as bad as before.
Unless there's something drastically wrong with the gun you're looking at, I'd bet that it will feel a whole lot better after cleaning a some lube. When do you get it from laway, so we can hear the ending to this story?
Also, when you do pick it up, if your barrel wrappers have nicely visible dates on them, it would be great if you could put a pic of them in here...

This will help us nail down production dates...every little bit helps.

This is possibly a Pack that has had the original revolver OR the 4" barrel replaced. It's still a pack, and as Mike said, lot's of us have had to "build-a-pack", I'm trying to build onr now. I would say that a good cleaning and lube has about a 99% chance of solving your problem. It's tough waiting, but it's worth it.

What... you mean to tell me people actually build their own PP's....?
