Hi all,
I am new around here. Just got my first DW revolver (mod 44). I thought I would be on my own with it until I discovered this great forum. Someone (forget name) posted an excellent description of how to disassemble large frames.
The cylinder end-to-end play was about .004 to .005. Power Custom does not offer any cylinder bearings with sufficient ID. So I bought "shim washers" at McMaster with .001 and .002 thickness and .375 ID. OD was too large but I was able to "trim" that with regular scissors. It ain't pretty but installed it is not visible at all.
The only remaining problem are the barrels. There is 4 of them, two 6" and two 8". Whoever owned it before apparenty shot it but never bothered with cleaning. The pitting is bad in some cases. One of the 6" is so rough, it feels like sand paper. Also, there appear to be machining marks on some of the rifling. Or maybe that's degraded too. Were there ever any quality problems with these things?
More importantly, does anyone have 44Mag barrels for sale (with or without porting)? Preferably the 6" version, I have got one good 8".
Thank you,
Ferd

New barrels without the shroud are not that expensive from Dan Wesson, if you did not know that.
Here is the price list https://www.danwessonforum.com/?page_id=202
I just send my DW to DW for endshake repairs. My movement was in the crane. Have yet to get a call about an estimate.

You didn't mention where your gun was made. The Palmer guns had some quality issues, but many are fine and shoot well. Don't disgard the old barrels yet. You might want to try fire lapping them. Check out Veral Smith of LBT; he sells kits that include soft lead push through slugs and a lapping compound that you put on cast bullets and fire using a very reduced charge. I got a kit for my max and ended up using it on all my guns including b/p, it smoothes up the barrel and the slugs can be used to test your progress. They improved the accuracy of all the guns. He also includes very detailed instructions for doing it.

Guys,
Thank you for all the barrel info. This is really helpful, it is good to know the barrels are still available. I will definetely look into fire lapping. Prior to knowing about these options I was considering a conversion to 45 Colt. I am more partial to 45 anyway, but I think I will rather preserve what I have with this one.
On the frame it says Monson.

I had a simular question a few months ago, not sure if this is the same thing your dealing
with or not. Here's the link with barrel pics.

Blacktop, my machining marks are perpendicular to the rifling. It is as if there was some "stuttering" or vibratins during fabrication. Can't think of a better way to describe it. It is present in all of the barrels, in some more than others.
I have not gotten around to shooting it yet (need to load up some ammo first) but I suspect it will cause leading.
I will try posting some pictures of the gun and particularly the barrels soon.
