Haven't got my first Dan back from Mark yet and already picked up on a beautiful frame. It is a Monson and the serial# is 357 B00585x. Any idea on the age? I'm guessing it's a 15-2 made around 1992. Think I've got Eric talked into an exclusive VH2.5 just for me and you can bet I want nothing less than his logo in bold etching where everybody can see. And Erics shrouds are looking cooler and cooler all the time so she's (my Dan 🙂 going to be sporting a new look every time she leaves the house. And let's not forget my original Dan that got me into all of this, as soon as Marks done, she's keeping her VH8 (still love that look) and wearing an LB Special (wood type will be a surprise). Have learned how to take the pics, just need some tips on pic size etc. BTW, does anybody have any tips on how much torque to use on barrel nuts? Does the tightening of the grip screw have any affect on hammer action? Or, is my screw length wrong. I noticed too much tightening seemed to hinder the smoothness of the pull of the hammer.
Anyway folks, like I promised, some pics are going to be showing up soon and maybe I'm building them up a bit but, they're new to me and best of all they're DANS'. Can't believe I got hooked so quick! Oh well, so much for the '90 and '98 softails. 🙁 Anyway,Mum's thinks the Dan's are safer. And now that I've placated her with a 9mm, that just gives me more leeway to work/play with.
Any tips on the best laser boresights available?
Sorry I've been gone so long, I'm sure you miss all my amusing questions. But, believe me, I've been busy. You'll see!

Sorry I haven't got back with you Hossman but, all of a sudden, it was like I was in the "Twilight Zone" or something. It was like my first Panhead back in '73. Or my first free fall in '74. It just takes over and doesn't let go. The only difference here is; it's cheaper (somewhat), safer (somewhat), and I'm just older and can't be doin' all that crazy stuff anymore. AND, above all, it's just plain fun!
Thanks DWA (Ole Porky), I kind of figured it would be somewhat similar to the lug nut on a car. Too tight, and you'll never get it off. Awesome Dan's btw man , the more and more I see those EHs the more I'm inclined to go with one (or two, or who knows). I'm going to try the pic size too, after all this bragging, my Dan's better look top notch.
In the past, I've used a Sitemark laser boresight and had pretty good luck with it. But I went and got a cheappie (forgot the name of it right now), dialed it in and couldn't hit the broad side of the proverbial "barn". I'm thinking maybe it's something I'm doing (that's when the tightening of the barrel nut question came up). I mean this was ridiculous! Anybody got an idea what I may be doing wrong? Had any similar problems in the past?
BTW, any idea on the age of the gun? It feels like it isn't even broke in yet. Looks like it too.
And btw, anybody know where a poor man with can pick up on a .44 mag. (DW, of course). Frame or just parts, doesnt matter. I'll be checking the "Forum" for sure. And remember, my name on GB is dwowner and my wife's is dwowner2 (real original, huh?).
Pics' coming soon!

Got another question gents (and ladies?), does anyone know or have any ideas on how to refurbish the grip medallions? In particular, the ones with the DWA inside the oval. They look like they'er made of brass so I'm thinking they could be polished all the way down then painted flat black. The surface detail could be polished back off and then sealed with a lacquer type finish. Just a thought, but I'm hoping someone has heard of or knows of a better and more effective and reliable way. Let me know if you have any ideas, OK?

NOt sure on the Grip medallions LB may be able to help there. On sighting in I just use some type of rest though mostly I shoot short range with 2.5" ba's. So if I hit what i am aiming at all is good.
Try out them pics and thanks guys! 28mm lens hmmm Gary! I have a wide angle for my old nikon digital I may have to try that! Gotta get some cool evenings and some time to pile up a few dans and shoot some pics then throw some lead! is here to stay!!!!

Jim, I'm pretty sure they're brass.
I haven't restored/refurbished any DW emblems myself so far, but I have had some experience with other brass (non-ferrous metal) items. I would first strip any pre-existing loose paint & tarnish using a ½ & ½ mix of vinegar & table salt in boiling water. Rinse with water. Buff the medallion lightly with steel wool, then rinse with water. Any remaining original paint is ok. Shoot it with some electrical contact cleaner (cleans off any residual finger oils), let dry, then paint it with a light-medium coat of non-gloss black paint.
Once dry (probably an hour is fine), hit it with some 600+ grit sandpaper, wrapped around your finger. Stroke it lightly & evenly across the surface, until all raised portions are even. Rinse again & blow it dry.
It should come out looking as good as new.

Hey Charger, thanks, I've got a couple of sets of medallions I can experiment with anyway. So I'm definitely going to try this. Will do some before and after pics.
DW 41 Fan, on the , ever hear of the Moh's hardness scale? Or the Scoville heat scale? Just a thought, I'm working on it.
EWK, didn't I see a type of vented or slotted EH? Am seriously considering this look (and efficiency). It's got to be an eye catcher too!
Thanks so much for the help, everybody. Oh, btw, any idea on the age of this 357 B00985x yet? Was it a special make or order? Just don't want to sound too stupid if someone asks.

Looks like a pretty standard serial number to me. You can check our serial number registry here:
https://www.danwessonforum.com/dwf-content/files/DanWessonSerialNumbers.pdf
That might give you an approximate idea of the date of manufacture.

Thanks Mike, that's where I came up with the approx. 1992. I was just curious as to why that was the only # that started with 357 (cal. I'm guessing, but why? The # records the entire pedigree anyway). Damn Feds, just have to confiscate everything, ya know?
I'm just wondering if there isn't a FOIA clause that would allow us access to all that information. Has anyone checked on this?

Hey Jim:
Several other members have turned up 15-2's with 357B or 357S prefixes to their serial numbers. My 715 was made in 1985 and the prefix was SD; the S was for stainless and the D seems to have been for 15. My 741 begins SC and my and my 744 begins SB.
DW had a lot of different SN patterns over the years.
BTW, Jody has been working for several years to get the info through both FOIA and a senator. We wish him .
