While at the range with my 14-2 on Friday, I decided to switch my Pachmyr grip for the wooden ones that came with my revolver.

When I got back to shooting, I cocked it for a single-action pull. After getting the first shot off, the hammer would not stay cocked! By the grace of God I did not have an AD, but it was a near thing! I remembered reading here in the threads that the grip screw could interfere with the mainspring (but that's all I remember), so I turned it back a few threads and it cocked fine. Needless to say I switched back to the Pachmyrs to finish out my session.
My question is: Does the grip screw interference with the mainspring cause this issue, or do I have something else going on here?
(I am going to get some small washers to use with the wood grips.)

I had the same problem when switching grips. You can get shorter screws at the hardware store if they are well stocked. If not then try a fasteners specialty store. As I read elsewhere on the forum, you really only need a few turns of the screw to hold the grip on, so shimming with small washers, if you can find any small enough (try lockwashers rather than flat washers), can work fine, but you might as well have the correct screw for each grip. Then you don't have to fiddle with washers.

What i have found that most hardware store washers need to be turned down to fit. I have now added one waher to each grip as to not dig in to wood or plastic. the Hardware store screws will not be the same hex head size though not really an issue.
You guys are on the right track. DW sold long and short grip screws somewhere the length of these should be listed.
Nice looking mini pac you have there. I like the 14's earlies and 2's

Str8shtr, Even if the hammer would have dropped the gun should not go off. The transfer bar would have prevented an AD unless the trigger was pulled to the rear allowing the transfer bar to rise and strike the firing pin. You can rest a little easier in case this ever happens again. Nice DW by the way! jwk

+1 on Steve's response. Sweet deal there Did you change the sight
or is that a model 15 BA ? Don't see many 8 inchers on the 14's

That picture is from right after I got the gun. The barrel is from a 15, I believe. Since then I have gotten the conversion sight from EWK so that I can shoot .357s. POI is about 3" to the left of POA at 20 yds, but elevation is dead nuts.

JWK: Thanks for the reminder about the transfer bar. When that hammer dropped, I turned into a quivering bowl of Jello. Good thing I had my boogerhook off the bangswitch!

Yep, grip screw interferes if its too long.
Washers will do the trick just fine (as will trimming a bit off the grip screw ... but that might make it too short for the other grip)
ACE Hardware stocks nice nylon spacers in a variety of thicknesses. Fast, cheap solution.
