Well I picked up my Monson 744 at my shop last night. Found it on gunbroker from a well known gun shop in VT (just a few hours from me). I really wanted one as I didn't like the looks of my Ruger Super Redhawk 7.5" and liked the idea of changing barrels. So that explains why I paid as much as I did - certainly no great deal but not super awful either.

Anyway, here's a link the to the auction for pictures: http://www.gunbroker.com/Item/576838096

The condition was good but there were some handling marks and scuffs that weren't noticeable in the auction photos. I wish they described it a bit better other than saying "light handling marks". I suppose I can get over that since it's a 20+ year old gun. But what I couldn't get over is the gritty/sticking ejector rod! It actually will get stuck in the outward position and has to be pushed back in manually! I'm new to DW's but I expected better of these revolvers.

I unscrewed the ejector rod and star to see if there was some fouling or dirt inside causing the grittiness. Also blasted it out with some Hornady one shot cleaner and dry lube. It did nothing 🙁

DA trigger stacks pretty bad and feels like it's 15lbs while the SA trigger is lighter and crisp but seems hard to cock. But that's a different topic and I'm sure can be fixed with a trigger job by my local gunsmith.

I'm waiting to hear back from the gun shop. I wouldn't have paid this much had I known these issues....

I realize that scuffs/scratches can be removed/polished with some scotch brite or flitz metal polish though I'm not sure I would trust myself to do that kind of work. Or maybe sell the barrel/shroud and buy a new set from CZ?....

It's the ejector rod that is irritating and unacceptable for them to sell a revolver with a barely functioning ejector...

Well I fixed the ejector rod issue by giving a thorough cleaning and rotating the cylinder a bunch.

BUT I had issues afterwards where the gun would bind up after three dry fires. Then disassemble the ejector again put back and now it's fine. Maybe something I messed up?

Though there is almost like a grunting/scraping noise every 3-4th dry fire...

Long story short, I complained and the gun shop is offering a $100 refund or return the gun. I emailed my gunsmith and he says, my best advice is to return it. More advice later....

Well that wasn't the news I wanted to hear. I'll have to continue my search for a 744. There's a Palmer 6" on GB now at $700....

744's are readily available .. just slow down and take your time to look around, there are great deals out there.

Good advice. I really do need to slow down. Once I get the itch for a gun, I won't stop thinking about it until I get it in my hands haha. Awful disease.....

Anyway, I figured I shoot it before sending it back. Wow were the cases sticking! They would only come out about 1/4" then I had to forcefully pry them out. Never happened with my Ruger super redhawk. The DW gunsmith called me earlier and said it sounds like oversized chambers....Also the bore was pretty frosted after cleaning. Strong rifling though. I will say it shot like a laser beam at 15 yards. One ragged hole....

My next battle will be getting the shop to refund the cost of return shipping and the transfer fee ($25) I paid at my shop....

This one is pretty decent. I'm not a collector so I don't care too much about the whole Monson versus Palmer made debate...

The Monson>Palmer>Monson>Palmer ... silliness is just internet BS. If the gun passes a standard revolver function checkout, and the price is right for you, it's a good deal.

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

I agree with Steve. I tend to buy Monson because I like uniformity. It's a German thing I think...screwy

if you find one...what's your plan?

Haha, maybe. I'd probably do the same thing once I have at least 1 dan wesson revolver. Or maybe I'd want one of each....

If you think you awful disease is bad now, just wait until you get a gun you like. It is called Dan Wesson Aquisition Syndrome, or DWAS for short. It is incurable, but not fatal.

The 10" BA was worth the money IMHO if it had no problems. I love the 10"V for its long sight radius. As you discovered, one ragged hole.

Haha I can only imagine. If will be nice to find one I like.

I agree, if the 10" DW I bought didn't have issues, it totally would have been worth the money.

I really want a 8" barrel. So that one I linked above, I'd probably sell off the barrel/shroud. I want more sight radius and weight to soak up the recoil. Though if I do get that one, I'll shoot it first to see how the 6" barrel feels.
