I just looked at two Dan Wesson 357s I am thinking of purchasing. Both are Monson made. One Is either a 14 or 14-2 service model and the other is either a 15 or 15-2 Target. (still not sure how to tell the difference between to -2s and the non -2s)
I have a couple questions I was hoping to get answered.....
Neither have a model number stamped in the frame behind the Crane. Why? My model 15-2 has it stamped. Did they stamp some and not others?
The second question is that the 15 has a set screw through the rear of the trigger guard that is used to limit the travel of the trigger. The 15-2 that I own does NOT have this? Is this something that the company randomly put on some guns and not others or is this custom???
Thanks in advance!

1) I haven't seen any 15-2's with the "15-2" stamped under the crane, that's interesting. Would you mind showing us a pic of this? Norwich guns had models stamped on them, maybe yours is a Norwich gun? Why DW's don't have their model numbers stamped on them is something I've wondered myself, but cannot answer. Initially, they had model numbers on them, but they did away with that feature early on.
2) The early 15-2's had the trigger over-travel screw in the trigger initially, it was moved to the frame a few years later.
Models…you should be able to spot the difference.
Model 14
Model 14-2
Model 714-2 (the "7" denotes a stainless gun in DW's across the board)
Model 15
Model 15-2
Model 715-2 (just to keep the pics uniform )
Any questions?

Ohhhh and by the way, added to my new DW "collection! To go along with the 15-2 I refurbished (shown in one of my other post) I picked up his little brother.... a very nice 14-2! I am so happy! Now I want the Porkchops and the 44 mags! I smell a divorce in the near future......
Thanks everyone, love this sight. Seems much less "competitive" than some of the others and people here seem actually HAPPY when a Dan Wesson is purchased and treated well.

That is exactly how I was taught but the post at the beginning of this thread (and other places) list a model 15 and 14 (i think) in both Porkchop and Straight shield. That's what was confusing to me.
I was told the -2 meant straight shroud
NO "-" was the Porkchop.
Exactly, the "-2" is a straight shroud. I think that the confusion is often due to owners & sellers often describing a 15-2 for example, as simply a model 15. For example, there were no stainless Porkchops, so when someone says they have a 715, most folks automatically know the person is talking about a 715-2, since there's no way for it to be confused as a Porkchop.
However, if someone describes their blued gun by saying they have a 15, then that is basically describing one of three guns...the 15, 15-1, or 15-2. The 15 & 15-1 are both Porkchops, and the 15-2 is a straight shroud. I think that's the basis for the confusion. Like I said above, it would be nice if DW had simply stamped the model on the gun, then there would be much less confusion.

Maybe someone could update the tabbed information on this site and also the very first posting in this thread to reflect this info. That is really where all of MY confusion comes from because apparently these posting are not accurate and nothing worse than inaccurate info to get a guy confused!
Thanks again for sharing the knowledge.

By "tabbed information", do you mean the models tab with pictures? If that's the one, it's in progress.
You had me a little lost for a second, I was going to say that YOUR post is the first posting in this thread. But I figured out that you probably mean THIS THREAD. You're right, that needs to be fixed, I'm on it.

I'm sorry, I meant this one when you first enter the revolver section.

Hope this helps. It seems contradicting to me.
Thanks
