OK, got to the range with the new 22 (6" barrel, Monson). Cleaned it first. Barrel looked good. Shot a box of 50 from a bench rest.
First three shots grouped in a 1 inch circle. Then it got crazy.. Hits spread over 18", holes were odd shaped, as if the bullet was tumbling. Occasional hits on center, nice round holes, then all over again. Looked down the barrel, and there was a little streak of powder at the bottom right at the chamber end. Couldn't tell how thick it was.
Used Remington round nose high-velocity. I'll clean it again and try some standard velocity ammo, but is this a sign of wrong ammo choice or bad barrel ot what? Trying to figure out if I should work the problem (new barrel?) or try to get refund from seller.... Thanks for your help!! -Steve

If you haven't done so yet, use this checklist, with special attention to Cylinder Play and Timing.
If your cylinder is not well alinged with the barrel, and held rigidly in place throughout the transition from chamber to fully into the barrel, that bullet has no chance of staying stable in flight. And, as noted many times here and elsewhere, ammunition is a bigger variable in .22 lr than most people realize. I have seen this type of problem solved solely through ammunition choice.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

It appears to me that all but one bullet tumbled after it left the barrel and impacted the target while tumbling (including the three bullets that hit the bullseye). I've seen situations like this before with rifles. Generally, when I've seen this with rifles, the cause has been one of two things. First, the barrel twist rate or inside diameter was cut incorrectly at the factory and the rifle had to be sent back to the manufacturer for re-barreling. Second , and not so common, is that there was a barrel problem near or at the crown of the barrel.
If none of the advice provided in prceding posts corrects the problem, I would have a gunsmith look at the barrel to make sure that you do not have a bad barrel.

Thanks for all the tips, I'm going back to the range tomorrow to try some other ammo (standard velocity target ammo).....and in wire brushing the barrel tonite, a sliver of lead came out.....that may be the source of the problem (I'm hoping it is a cause, not just an effect!)
Will let you all know more after the experiment continues...

The good news is, that if it is the barrel, it's real easy to fix that yourself, not so easy to do with anything but a Dan. GG's mention of the crown reminded me of this discussion about crown maintainence and crowning:

Keep us up to date, these are the kinds of topics that just help everyone learn more.

I am having the same problem with my DW .22 Mag. Same target results as Stevie got on his target. I sent mine back to Norwich and shot it last week. Hits are all over the place and tumbling. When I get a chance I will try some other brand of ammo. I used CCI 22 WMR TMJ 40 gr. high velocity.

I won't go into an in depth discussion here, but with many 22's ammo is EVERYTHING.... Some DW 22's were rumored to be bad out of the box and the fix action was to order a new barrel (I don't believe it).. Anyway, here's a quick example on ammo-- I have a Mossberg 144LSB target .22 rifle; it's older than dirt and a tackdriver... as long as I feed it CCI Mini-Mags . If I try to shoot any bulk ammo in it, it is acceptable, but with the mini-mags it is a one hole wonder.
My S&W 617 is the same way--find the right ammo and it shoots like a dream; anything else is plinking ammo only.
I haven't shot my DW 22 enough to analyze it yet....

Jaggman,
Still having problem with that mag? That is awful. My blued DW 22 likes most everything I've fed it, so far. the Stainless 10" on the other hand is much choosier. I would have saud twist rate to the problem I was seeing, but all the other mentions are ones I have not experienced before personally. I have had tumled bullets out of my 375 9-1/2" barrel with the 200 grain bullets, but if you speed them up they work OK. I would recommend to Stevie to try a few different velocities and see if anything changes.

Stevie-Your Dan is sending you a message, sounds like you're hearing it too! It is frustrating to not just be able to grab any .22 lr ammo and have it work, it's just the nature of the beast, but the shaving on HV sounds strange. Have you closely examined the barrel and chambers with a bright light and some magnification? Is it possible that you have a scored or damaged chamber that throws a shaving?

When dealing with new to you 22LR revolvers the shooter would be wise to take several different brands to try out. The bullets sizes will very so much from mfg to mfg and even within same brand but different type. In 22 magnum this is not such a problem due to jacketed ammo it seems to me to be more accurately made for diameter, so the revolver doesn't that problem.
DW 22 LR models would probably be effected even more then some other brands, because the 22 WMR & LR models all used the same barrels and were probably larger diameter then say a S&W barrel. Ruger SA 22 WMR/LR convertible revolvers that used larger diameter barrel and the LR were not as accurate as magnum ammo. I had one like that years ago and it did just like your gun did with some brands of ammo.
My 722 is very picky with LR ammo, but the WMR all shoots great so far with 5 different brands and several different weights and types of bullets. My old S&W model 48 WMR is probably same way if I were to ever put the LR cylinder in and shoot it at the range.
