Please offer your opinion. This is a Monson made SS 357SM with a Monson made 8" barrel. There are nicks in the barrel near the front.
And there is this Flame cutting.
The gun has a scope mounted via screws drilled and tapped.
The seller wants $700.
Yea or Nay, and why?
Thanks,
Mike
Hey Mike,
The slotted shroud is a premium. The flame cutting is cosmetic and really shouldn't get any deeper than it already is.
Now does it have a box and tools? Also what kind of scope does it have?
If it doesn't have the box and tools I think this may be slightly high but if your were to get this off an auction then you would have to pay an additional $50 + in fees and shipping.
Let us know which way you go!

Zoommb,
The flame cutting is rather common on this model and caliber if it was fired any amount. IHMSA 80X80 can offer much more about that I am sure due to his experience. To my knowledge, other than cosmetics the flame cutting only occured to a certian degree then never got any worse and never compromised the integrity of a DW revolver. The nicks in the barrel would deter me personallyunless it was a real bargain only because there are a fair amount of the blued slotted revolvers that come upfor auction and often struggle to get to the price you individual is requesting. You mention SS, the frame looks SS. The barrell shroud looks blued? Is it just the angle of the photo? If it is stainless then the price can be justified because you can work the nicks out to a point. Another member started a thread about stainless repairs. Last, what make is the scope? Do you wish to and intend to shoot it scoped. If you do then you are ready to go without having to obtain the parts to do it yourself. Pistol scopes come in all levels of quality and price. That would help to know what the optics are. I hope I helped even though it was long winded.

Thanks for your responses.
The shroud is, in fact, stainless and those nicks don't look too bad. I've cleaned up nicks on on the 445S i bought successfully. I do wish that the shroud was a VH and slotted though.
I'm glad to hear that the flame cutting stops at some point. I thought it would just continue 'til it cut through the top strap, so that's good news.
It has the barrel tool but no box and no feeler gauge.
The optical sight is a Nikon Monarch 2x. I'm a Nikon collector so I'm comfortable that the quality of the sight is top notch unless you guys tell me otherwise. I will probably not shoot it with the sight on anyway. I took the optical sight off of my Desert Eagle because the weight was just too much and I got tired of it.
Not only will I have to pay $50 shipping, but my FFL dealer charges $5 to fax his licence and $50 to receive a used gun. And for some reason he finds it necessary to open my used guns when he gets them.
So now we're at $805.
But it is a stainless 357SM.

Hey Mike,
You might want to shop around for your FFL Transfer. Like Dusty I pay a lot less for the transfer! I pay $25 for the transfer and no fee for sending the FFL to the seller. They even gave me a photo copy of their license and I just email it to the seller when I buy one out of state.

For folks who haven't seen this here is a link to the FFL Holder Search on GunBroker.

True. And I've used it. You'd think that living in a suburb of a major met area, I would be able to find one with reasonable fees. However, the one I mentioned is 4 miles from my home. After that the distances and travel times increase so rapidly that the cost in time (2 trips, once to sign the paperwork and again 3days later to pick up the gun) quickly becomes not worth it.

Are there any gun shops near you, some will transfer for the going rate $25, and might not be listed on the website. I had a pistol transferred by Gander Mtn, actually their gunsmith, who is an FFL holder for $20. They opened their store 2 years ago within 5 mi. of my house. I won one on auction and while in the store, I asked at the repair counter and the smith said he would do it, so I picked it up at the store. Is the scope mount tapped to the frame or the shroud? DW/CZ still has shrouds if you want the heavy. The slotting was to reduce wt and usually came with the light shroud.

Thanks All --
Unfortunately like I said the time and distances rise so fast --- but, then again, how often do I do it?
Re: The shroud.
Yes, I know that DW has 'em. Yes, I know the reason for the slots was lightening.
What I'm looking for is a VH slotted because I think it's the prettiest one of the bunch.
What is also important is that it be Monson made, if possible.
OK, so I'm a dreamer.

Good advise. I have about 1,000 rounds thru my Max and the flame cutting is no worse than the one pictured.

Thanks Tigger.
That's good to know since I just sent a cashiers check for the gun. Can't wait to get it. The damage to the finish looks easily repairable and I'll just make a couple of screw-in plugs for the scope mount holes in the shroud as someone suggested.
I'm not into reloading yet but I'm gonna have to get into it since ammo for my FA .500WE costs $3.30 per trigger-pull and that doesn't include the shipping costs. Also, there's no ammo available for this gun. MidwayUSA shows ammo available as BO from Grizzley but none is listed on their site so I'm going to email Mike @ Grizzley to see if he will load up 100 rounds for me to get started. Something jacketed with somewhat less than arm-breaker power would be nice to start with.
MidwayUSA also lists DW ammo for the 445 as BO but I don't think I'll ever get it. However, I have plenty of brass for that one. Now to acquire some reloading gear and learn how to use it.

Zoommb,
For your FA .500WE did you try Buffalo Bore? They are not inexpensive, but I bought some ammo from them for my Linebaugh to get started. If you want factory loaded DW ammo, all but the .375 can be bought from:

Good Shooting!
I would be curious when you start loading the .500WE what you end up with. I just started with mine.

I had just obtained some trail boss for fun loads in the Linebaugh and the .500WE. H ave not had time to do anything with it however. Good luck with the DW ammo at Bullseye. Compared to the Grizzly and Buffalo Bore ammo Bullseye is rather fair priced.

I've found the 180 to 200gr bullets to be the most accurate in my model 40 and what they were actually made to shoot. Someone was selling brass for the 357max on the want ad section. There's also brass that comes up on auction sites regularly, usually Remington new unprimed. I started seriously into reloading when I got my Max in 1992 and have saved a fortune, based on the cost of max ammo, when you can find it. If not reloaded to the limit; you can usually get several reloads out of the brass. I usually hover just above the starting loads for plinking and have worked up near max for hunting loads.
