I just picked up a Hogue monogrip (rubber) for my 44 because the wood grips are a bit too slick for my tastes. I can put them away and ensure they stay in perfect condition this way also. However, strangely the grip's screw channel is cut in such a way that the factory grip screw is not long enough to engage any threads in the tang of the frame. Is there a longer screw that you can order from CZ or should I just use a drill bit to "modify" the grip?

Don't try the drill ... There is an insert in the rubber grip for the screw to go through, you may ruin it. The stock large grip screw works fine with the hogue. Put the screw in the grip all the way and look inside the grip--can you see any of the screw sticking through? If not, just go to the hardware store and get a longer screw (that's what I use). they have the same style hex screw.

It only has to be a little longer. If it is too long, you won't be able to cock the hammer the whole way back. (Hold on-- lemme go measure a screw ....) ....My short screws are 1 1/8" and my long ones are 1 1/2". You need the 1 1/2".

(PS... I do have one grip (wood) that takes an odd screw size.)

Well, I figured it out.
I had a 1 1/2″ screw from the factory. I went and bought some 1 3/4″ and noticed that the head sank MUCH farther into the grip than the facory screw. Well, the ones I bought had smaller heads than the factory screw. The factory screw wasn't too long, the head was too wide to fit all the way into the grip's channel. So the 1 3/4″ screws were too long. I just trimmed one of them to 1 1/2″, figured it would be better than grinding the original screw.
For comparison purposes, the screws I purchased had .265" diameter heads. The factor screw head was .304". I don't know what is standard for a 8-32 internal hex bolt, but I'd bet on the smaller ones.
