I recently got the itch to scope my DW .44... so I did.  I didn't want to drill and tap so I purchased a BSA clamp on mount and was really disapointed.  Between the weight of the scope (actually a bushnell trophy red dot) and the recoil from my heavier 44 loads, within 50 rounds the mount was a bent, dented distorted mess with no practial use other than to weigh down the bottom of a garbage can.  The clamp on mount is garbage and I won't buy another.  I hate the thought of drilling and tapping but I see it as being the only option at this point if I want a scope on my gun.

Another bothersome thing I noticed was that my barrel shroud tips back and forth (ever so slightly) just enough to throw my POI about 2 or 3 inches at 25 yds (and substantially at 100).   I never noticed this before because I was only using the iron sights and the shroud didn't seem to move.  Is this little bit of play in the shroud normal?  If not... how do I eliminate it (my barrel is tight so far as I can tell).  Are you guys drilling and tapping the shroud or is there a way to drill and tap the frame itself?  Any recommendations considered and appreciated.

Drew,

The Jack Weigand mounts seem to do a good job.

You  can buy from them direct.  On their site they list specific applications for DW revolvers.

There is also a clamp-on mount from B-Square but to me that mount seemed to make the gun not balance correctly.

If it were me I would order an extra shroud from Dan Wesson and have them tap it for you.  That way you can keep the original well original.

I have one of the old B Square aluminum clamp on mounts that is on my 722(M) V8 and have a Wiegand ordered for the 8″ 357, but I may not even use it if it requires removing the rear sight as it looks to do.

The old B Square is a nice mount, but puts the optical line of sight too high, causing a major difference in POA & POI if you change the range you would be shooting. That may be a bit too much for hunting small game.

I have two of the weigand mounts and the rear sights are still on both guns.  I think as long as you have a 6" barrel or longer you can leave the rear sights on.

I have a blued B-Square mount that I initially used only for load testing. Once I find what the gun likes, I remove it and shoot all my Dan Wessons with iron sights.

Thanks guys.

I must correct myself.  The clamp-on mount my gun destroyed was a b-square aluminum clamp on... not a BSA.  Sorry to give BSA a discredit they didn't deserve.  If I get a chance, I'll post up pics of the dented, bent mess it has become.

I would love to rely on my ability to hit things with iron sights but my eyesight won't allow me to focus properly beyond about 15 yds.  I can either fovus on the sights or I can focus on the target but not both.  Even my AR is scoped for distance and lasered for up close and personal.  The eyes just aren't what they used to be.

Now I'm in debate on wheter to drill/tap the shroud or the frame.  For obvious reasons the shroud seems to be the way to go (buy a new one and keep it original)but if I can't correct the slight rock in the shroud, a scope on there wouldn't be too effective beyond 25 yds or so.  If I tap the frame, it's quite perminent.

When the barrel is tight, there should be No movement from the shroud, tightening the barrel nut should press the shroud to the frame.  I also have a set of 3 clamp on rings for a DW that came with a grab bag of parts from an old DW Ebay sale, they are for a 1" tube and I can't use them, if you're interested.  I don't have any info on the rings other than they are for a DW.

I have a b-square  clamp on mount on my 15-2,  Seems to stay put if every thing is loc-tited.

I decided to scope my super mag and used Weigand mount and rings.  My gun had already been drilled and tapped.  They used the recommended factory spacing so the Weigand mount fit perfect.  It is rock solid.  If you go with a screw on, I think this is a great choice.

If your shroud is loose that means your barrel is loose. Seems to me every time you fire with a loose barrel damage to the threads could result.  I wouldn't shoot it again with anything loose. Remember to set the B/C gap. I set mine to less than .006 the factory recommends and have zero problems with either gun other than wiping the front of the .357 cylinder after 100+ rounds sometimes.

I had a B Square mount on a 744 I had and never had a problem.  I'd talk to B Square and see what they have to say abou it.
