Since DW barrels are not serialized parts, and many people have more than one barrel of a given type, just curious what you all do to tell them apart?
Even as a DW newbie, I already have more than 1 instance of a specific barrel type, and I don't want to mix them up. Possible schemes might be:
- Never have more than 1 loose at a time, and always put them back in their original box or case. But I'm not sure I can always be that careful, or that I would never have more than 1 loose.
- Mark them in some way. But I can't think of any semi-permanent, non-degrading way to do this.
- Know your barrels by little identifying characteristics (roll marks, scratches, etc), and just keep track of them mentally, notebook, or other means. But I'm sure I'll mix them up at some point.
- Just don't care - these are interchangeable parts, so what's the problem? Maybe I shouldn't worry?
Thoughts from those who have had many DW's for years?

Are you talking just the barrels themselves? Or barrel & shroud assemblies?
Shrouds of course, are roll marked, making identification easy. I never store my barrels separately from their corresponding shrouds. As far as keeping my extra BA's with their matching guns, I make one of these to keep them in...

Thanks to all for responses.
Of course I meant to say “barrel and shroud assemblies” but being a DW newbie I was imprecise.
From what has been said so far, I get the picture. Being new to Interchangeable barrels (and shrouds), I wanted to find out what the experts have been doing before making some mistake that I could not un-do.
So far, I only have 2 barrels and shrouds that are identical, and am trying to just keep track of which came with which gun - In case it still matters to me.

I share a little of both #3 & #4. When assembling pristine examples I have just selected the best parts available at time and therefore have swapped BA's and shrouds around to accomplish this task. I don't believe it really matters at all. Just my humble opinion.

Plus one to what Supermagfan said, I do the same thing, that's the beauty of the Dan Wesson interchangeable barrel system, you can customize your gun almost endlessly.
Anything worth doing is worth doing well.
