Looking at this one on gunbroker, anyone who knows me knows that .45 LC is my favorite caliber (Blackhawk and Redhawk Bear Disuader) while my first thoughts are to get a DW in .44 (since I dont have a .44) I saw this .45 on gun broker.
My first thought is it seems a little overpriced and has a fairly pronounced dragline. But if these are really that rare should I be considering it as I would ultimately like to have one?

JimBob:
It's pretty much standard policy here that if someone expresses a desire to bid on a unit on auction, the rest of us try not to step on him. Just so you know Jody called first dibs on that gun.
Obviously it's up to you but thta's generally how the rest of us do things here.

Thats fair enough, and I picked up the auction link before I saw Jody's interest on the other auction forum.
Though I do have a question, if we are calling dibs shoudlnt we be saying “definately will be bidding” or “I bid” so we arnt all sitting around waiting for someone to bid who doesnt in the end? If someone calls second dibs, the first person could PM they decided to pass or reached their maximum.
Obviously its in our interest as bretheren of the DW to avoid needless competition. And I am saying this with the deepest respect to all who keep this forum running and quality.

The last DW 45 I saw on GB went for $875. I know because I was willing to go $700, but that came and went. It was actually rougher than the current one. They are pretty rare and can handle the Ruger loads, and are relatively low recoiling due to their weight. I settled for a Ruger and a model 40 DW.
Hey Jimbob,
No one meant to step on any toes here... The 45's are pretty rare but you do see them. The blued ones seem to be more common than the stainless. This is actually the first Palmer 45 I have seen.
Normally the Palmer guns sell for a lesser amount than the same Monson or Norwich gun. Obviously this is excluding the the 414 SuperMags since there were only 25 made in Palmer.
I agree that seems like a pretty obvious turn line and the starting price seems pretty high for a Palmer gun but who knows... I'm actually not willing to go much higher than the asking price so I might be out of this one fast!

Jimbob raises a good question about how we coexist in an auction/bidding environment as DWF Brothers In (pursuit of) Arms
Obviously, Auctions are entirely Free Market situations. I suggest that if we want to respect each others wants, needs, and desires, we could check “Auctions” on DWF to see if anyone else is in on something, and state our intent to get in. If DWF members find themselves on the same items, they may choose to PM each other to make sure they don't needlessly bid up an item, and this should not be a violation of any Auction Forum site's rules.
A “First In” should not prohibit anyone from bidding on something, and we're all free to bid as we wish. It's OK to know how badly a friend wants something, rather than fight each other in a bidding DeathMatch.
A “First In” on a DWF Want to Sell that lists a specific selling price needs to be honored- offer made, offer accepted, done pending receipt of funds, and a WTS topic needs to updated as such. DWF Want To Sell is not an auction
FWIW, my opinion
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Jody,
You go for it and let me know when you stop bidding. I cant go that high either and honestly its bad timing I just bought a Ruger Redhawk 4" in 45 LC for a bear/hiking gun so doubt if I will be outbidding the last .45 that came up so its not like my big bore cartrige fix wont be satisfied for a while.
Plus as I said I am really looking for a buy on a .44 since I dont have one and want a good target gun to get used to it before I buy something like a S&W PD329 psychotically lightweight for the trail. What better than a Dan Wesson!

Thanks for the heads up on the “toe stepping”. I've never heard of that…an idea I'll have to mull over some.
So, when you see some thing you wish to bid on, say on GB, do you check here first to either make sure no one else is bidding or stake out your claim? I think I understand the concept…just trying to figure out how you make it work.

Basically, bid on and buy whatever you want. If you think you're fighting it out with another DWF Member, and want to PM/discuss with that member, fine.
You can let others know you're in on something or not. If I was on an auction item, and saw one of you guys there, I'd PM to let you know I'm in too, and share some idea of how badly I want the item.
I would have no problem bidding against a fellow DWF Member, but if I was not fully committed to going the distance I would not run up an auction needlessly. I think that's where the "courtesy" comes in. I would have no problem letting you know that I'm going to $xxx.xx on an auction (in PM only), if you let me know you're going higher, I'm out. You might have to fight everyone else for it, but not me.
This is my personal policy, not a DWF requirement FWIW
The only "Rule" is First In on WTS/WTB here on DWF

I think we have us some pretty good ground rules to go by now. Thanks Steve for outlining this.
Jimbob, I'm really not willing to go any higher than the starting bid. With it being a Palmer gun with no tool makes it a little less appealing. So if you want in on this one by all means jump in.
At $595 + $30 Shipping + $25 FFL Fee + $40 Barrel Tool = $690 just not sure it's worth it.
Plus I have another project that needs my attention right now.

If you discuss "coordinating" bids, I suggest PM rather than posting in Open Forum. Auction Sites sometimes don't like this. I was on a non shooting Auction Site that disabled a PM function on the site because people were discussing bid strategy

I will tell you guys the more I look at it the more I get a little worried about that dragline, sure all revolvers get them, its the sign of a working revolver but how many rounds have been through this thing?
I just dont get a good feel as the only other revolver I have (other than some antiques) that I have fired extensively is my blackhawk which is stainless and had a faint drag from the factory. Its hard to tell with bluing, for a gun that is othewise pristine could this be a sign of some mechanical issue? Or just enjoyment by a caring owner?

I dont know these revolvers enough to know, just seems like a lot of "contact" between the lock (or whatever the little tab is that holds the cylinder). I have only seen such a "broad" dragline in much older revolvers that have seen extensive use. I was wondeirng if it could be some wiggle in the crane assembly/cylinder lock (i have looked over several DW's with this issue). Also notice how the line is uneven in the tab slots, looking at my current dan it is a perfect line as are some of the other pictures on GB.
As I said I know drag lines are normal and this one isnt that bad.
I think I am going to waive off as I have a new .45 Redhawk 4" to enjoy and I want to resume my search for a .44 mag with 6" barrel.

Looks like this one did not sell and the bid has been lowered with a BIN of $550. A little more in line...

Ya saw that, I am still passing. I just have to many toys on order and would rather have a few other guns (non DW of course).
