How "early" are you talking about? Porkchop or post-Porkchop type of early?
Right from day one (1970), they were available as either a gun by it's lonesome, or in Pistol Pac form. The guns by themselves shipped in paper boxes, the PP's arrived (I believe) in nice PP cases with soft innards.
Here's an example of both I've mentioned...
