Guys, I've gotta tell ya, THIS is the .445 SM I've been waiting for ever since the first article I read way back in the 80's, but couldn't afford to buy. Better late than never, right? I'm sooo glad I was finally able to get "that right" one.
It was pretty darn dirty when I picked it up yesterday afternoon, the online pic made it look cleaner than it was. But once I gave it s good scrubbing, it turns out that this gun is really clean! It doesn't appear to have been fired much either, I'd say less than 500 rounds, probably closer to 2 or 300.
Here's my attempt at decent "after-the-scrubbing" pics, taken quick-like this morning, on the frosty roof of the wabbit cage in the back yard.
It appears that the box took most of the bumps & bruises over the years, which is just fine by me.
Because it was so dirty on the parts I could see, I wanted to get inside & make sure things weren't too nasty in there, too. This is the first large frame DW I've taken apart, and everything I've heard was true…getting the action back together was quite a challenge. It's embarrassing to say, but it took me over 4 hours to take apart, scrub thoroughly & reassemble this freakin' thing!
I decided last night that I won't be taking my large frame DW's apart half as often as I do the small frame guns.
I am also surprised by how much hand grinding & machining there is inside there. That stuff certainly wasn't done on any 'ol CNC machine.
The action was very clean, so I gave it good wipe-down & didn't take it apart any further.
Thanks again to SMF for the link. Considering it's overall condition, I think I got myself a …and the fact that this is THE one I've always wanted, makes it priceless!
Can't wait to send some hot lead downrange!!

Charger, .
Very Nice.
I know you will enjoy that one. I wish I had waited for the slotted shroud model like you found, but I don't regret owning the compensated model that I have, especially for the price I paid.
That SMF is just a wealth of help and knowledge, isn't he? What a great friend.
Want a range report ASAP! Now get out there and shoot.

I would have loved a compensated one too. If I was picking one out new at a gun shop, it's the very next choice I would have had & it would have been tough to decide between the two.
I'll get a range report just as soon as the mud stiffens up a little at my "range". It takes the fun out of it, if you lose your shoes in mud when walking to re-set targets.

I'm just curious Charger, how does the size of your 445 compare to your Model 40?
The reason I ask is because my compensated 7445 makes my Model 40 look like a Model 15 in comparison. I love the 445SM, but it sure is huge/heavy compared to the much more comfortable size and weight of the Model 40.
I was forced to go compensated simply because I am a recoil weenie- LOL.
I also noticed the jug of H110... I gave up on that powder with any bullet lighter than 300gr- just a bit too much recoil for my tastes. Produced a nice fireball though.

Hey Pops, I must admit I have caved into the 'ol once again...pics & story to follow shortly.
Zoomb, it was under $900, so I'm happy. If it was over $1K, I would have puckered for sure.
CDF, you're right...the heavy barrel on this does feel more nose heavy than my Model 40. If I rest the barrel of each on a crossed leg, then they feel more even. Maybe I'll end up shooting this one most often from a rest...if I expect to hit anything, that is.

CF,
That is one real purty SM you got there. Looks like no turn ring at all from your pics. You are far braver than I at being willing to dissassemble that far. I have never tried that, yet. I am real interested to hear your range report as well. Oh yeah too.

Charger, welcome to the B.F.R. club (not the Magnum Research Club – smf? ). Congrats on your great purchase! A GDWB.
I too have one of those beautiful 7445's and do love it. I have a question, however. I acquired a box of ammo from where I do not remember, but not from the seller of my 7445. It may have been from the PAC breaker on GB, but i really can't remember, BUT, here's a pic of the box and the contents………………looks awfully identical to mine. And I just checked and mine is still here, so maybe I snuck into your abode, took some pics, and left quietly without any souvenirs. Did your's come with the 7445? And that H110 is great for flash photography…………..
Please overlook the filthy keyboard…………….work computer.
OOPS…………….sorry. This uploading is giving me trouble again………….next slide……..

Thanks guys!
BTW, I haven't actually loaded any of this H110 yet, so it sounds like I'd better hang onto my britches when I shoot it, huh?
Hey Jagg, your box of IHMSA ammo sure does look identical to mine, even the same calligraphy writing on the label. I bought mine from a GB auction sometime last year, the guy's name was Ron Jones...I don't recall his seller nickname. I couldn't pass it up when it came along.
Mox-ct, here are some more take down pics from another member...

Great buy, glad your happy wit 'er. The slotted barrel is growing on me....I'm starting to like mine more and more. You will love how it shoots, more lift and bang than a 44 but real controllable and accurate.
I also hate taking apart any double action revolvers, I had to take a break and come back to it upon assembly.
I will also attest to the flash of the H110, found it to work real accurate the hotter ya loaded it. But I couldn't get it to meter for crap in my powder tools. loaded about 2 hundred with that and then went to 'lil gun'. I may try H4227 also.
tried to insert a video clip i took at range to compare 44 vs 445 loads. not comstuper enough yet to do it though.
