So I've owned a few 40's over the years... but today I ran into an issue. I bought a nice 40 last week--when I pulled the BA today I found out there is no index pin in the frame. Normally not a big deal, but this one looks different.
Here is a model 40 with serial number starting 357M--has a standard DW pin.
and here is a model 40 with serial number E00--notice the large hole--under magnification it appears factory.
Anybody else have an E series they can pull apart and check the pin for me? I may have to make an index pin if this is not factory.

I'd say you either have a factory reject that shouldn't have gone out the door or some no-mind drilled it our for whatever reason. You basically have one choice – make (or have it made) a step pin that will press-fit the frame ID and slip-fit the shroud ID. Should be pretty simple. Here's a 40 with the same E00 prefix:

Gee, Thanks SHOOT , now I'll have to go re-sight in the iron now that
I pulled the shroud off ….that's OK , needs the dust blown out anyway.
I'm not gonna be much help here, mines a MB00 and has the pin.
Have you tried a roll pin yet ( I bet $ you have but just asking)
sure looks like that hole is stepped to me.
Is it me or dose Harley's pic look like a step pin ? look at where
the pin and frame meet, I see a ring.

It's a very small counterbore at the face of the hole. They probably put it in to ease the insertion of the roll pin. You can also see it in Mike's first photo. What you see is a shadow where the bevel is. It looks like they went too large and deep on Mike's gun. Regardless, it's a simple fix.

I pulled my E00# shroud this AM to check. I don't have the camera available but its a duplicate of harly's, to include the slight barney. Yours is noticeably larger as it nearly touches the cutout for the crane.
Technically, the glass is always full; half liquid, half air....
