So there was a model 40 357 maximum supermag on Gunbroker LNIB The starting bid was $1600 I contacted the seller asking for more pics. I always say something like "I hate paying taxes on GB" when I send the seller a message. He replied with good pics and offered to sell me the gun direct from his shop! We haggled and $1800 total out the door with shipping. Sometimes you get lucky! How did I do was this gun worth the price? Pics are from GB!
I was watching that and lusting. You can't have too many model 40s. You got tool and extra barrel. The extra barrel was because of forcing cone erosion from shooting bullets less than 180 gr.
1600 plus taxes and shipping make them about double what they were selling for 5 years ago. 40s were about 900 and 740s 1200. Those days are gone. Enjoy your iconic gun. They also chamber 38 Special, 357 Magnum and 360 Dan Wesson.

Yea I think it was a pretty good deal considering it had the extra barrel, the Zebra grip, and it has a extra grip that's a Dan Wesson rubber grip in a Dan Wesson box I think it has a DW on the side of the rubber grip. The only thing this dam thing did not have is a manual. The same dam Palmer supermag manual I have been looking for. The gun dealer I bought it from is contacting the guy who sold him the gun to see if he has it. Crossing my fingers! He thinks this gun is unfired but will have to wait and see. He sold it as used and i'm thinking it may have been fired.

Many folk took the wood grip off and put it in a Pachmyer box. I suspect the zebra came in the box too and the owner put the Hogue in the box. If it has DW medallions I will be very surprised. The grip box will tell you. It probably says "Exotic Wood". Dan Wesson did have Pachmyer Presentation grips with DW medallions in large and small frame available from the factory. I think Hunter packs came with them. Grippers with DW medallions came with the Field Pistol packs. I have a Model 40 with a DW medallions Gripper that was poorly customized to fit the round tang.

Blueing on a Palmer Model 40 is outstanding, I had pretty nice Monson but sold it to get an exceptional multi barrel Palmer set the bluing is amazing. A lot of the Monson Model 40’s will start to turn Barney to some degree.
There is a Monson Barney Model 40 on Gunbroker right now.

After reading about it here, I did some light web sleuthing on causes of color change, but couldn’t find anything definitive.
The finish on my Monson has yet to go the way of the dinosaur at this point and was just wondering if you have any insight or tips on how to keep it that way?
@stmstan 445 another beautiful score!

I’m thinking the red barrel tool in the box maybe for 15-2 357 mag, my DW 40 and 740 tools are not red.
Interesting .. my grip and blue barrel tool.

My Monson 40 has a black one. Maybe they changed the color as they ordered batches of tools? Or forgot which previous color went to which caliber when it came time to place a new order? That would be odd.

Got the 40 in today looks even better than I hoped! I think it's new. The barrel tool you guys thought was not correct is a correct one. I sold the extra barrel for $200 so brought my price down to $1600 I saw this other 40 hammer for $1300 on Gunbroker that's $1500 with tax and shipping and CC fees it was loose no box or tools and was plum (last pic) so I feel pretty good about my purchase!
You did good, I think. I haven't bought a model 40 since they were less than $1000. 740s were 1200. And that seemed high then. Lol. I knew the appreciation would happen but I didn't think it would be so fast. I used to buy all the extra barrels I could find on eBay for under $100. At $200 I am feeling pretty smug. They packed an extra barrel tube with each gun because of forcing cone erosion from shooting bullets smaller than 180 gr. You could probably shoot 170 gr. but 158,125 and especially 110 gr. will ruin the barrel.
