Hey guys, I was reminded of another difference the other day when looking at some photos I had taken.
The Monson cylinder is recessed for each cartridge and the rest of the back is flush. The Palmer gun has a raised rim machined on the outside edge of the cylinder with no recess for the cartridges. If this was a cost cutting measure (lack of the recess), I wonder why they cut the rim on the edge of the cylinder. Any guesses?

You can probably tell, my Palmer has a lot less miles on it than the Monsons. My pics will be lacking fine quality for a while, my camera quit on me and all I have is a cheapy cell phone.

Continuing the saga, I got a couple of horseshoe clips from DW/CZ and tried a dozen times unsuccessfully to insert one. Each time I put on the sideplate, the yoke would bind and the cylinder would be very very difficult to close.
After PM'ing with a couple of the bros, I decided to custom fit the clip. I used some 1600 grit wet/dry polishing pages and made the clip really shine. I tried taking a small amount off of the top area where the clip goes into a notch in the sideplate. That's where I could see wear from the binding.
Three attempts and a little back and forth, and I had it opening and closing like it should. I think the clip was just a little large. The two clips I got from DW looked the same and both hung the yoke.
Nothing looks as simple as just putting in a clip. It should have taken two minutes and not several hours and web PM. If an average Joe tune-up goes the same, I think I may have to shoot something. It felt great to finally use my own eyes and logic, and to get it running;but, the frustration was enormous at times.

And on the topic of Palmer:
I have rolled this gun in every direction I can imagine trying to see differences in fit and finish. It looks good. I do not see any glaring variances between my Monson and this Palmer. My problems with the horseshoe clip can not be placed at Palmer's door. I have no idea whether the gun is off spec or the 2 new clips were off spec.
The yoke matches nice to the yoke barrel, the cylinders look consistent, the fit of the sideplate is good, and the finish is 99%.
There are a couple of small imperfections in the stainless steel. The trigger is terrible at DA of 13 lbs and a SA pull of 5+lbs. Being fair, the gun does look unfired and there has been very little if any break-in. I need to get to 8 and 3-.
I'm heading for the firing line tomorrow and I'll be back with a range report on this Palmer 715.

Recessed chambers did go away at a not exactly known time, believed to be a cost cutting move.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Prescut, glad you figured it out. Whatever the reason, it is not the usual situation. Try the average Joe tuneup. If you follow the pictorial you should have no problems. Some sideplates are tight but if they came off they should go on. Wolff reduced power springs help the action tremendously. The reduced power trigger return spring smooths out and lightens the DA. Use the 8lb mainspring.

Hello All,
Many of my Monsons have a " horseshoe" clip that has been ground flat on one side. It was and is normal to fit this part. MY question always has been.... when re-assembling , what direction to put the flat side for smoothest operation ??? They always drop out when I remove the side plate. I have rationalized both front and back as well as It just doesn't matter..LOL

Yep, there is a flat side on some of the clips. That took me quite a bit of frustration to get to that knowledge.
If it wasn't for being referred to snake-eye I would probably still be searching for the unicorn. He commented that the flat sided clip was seen as well as the round ones. That comment suggested to me that there could be fitting involved.
This point really needs to go with the average Joe tuneup. That article should be a central point for accumulated knowledge.
thanks again to everyone for the help and suggestions
