At a local gun show, a friend of mine saw a DWA Shroud, 357 Mag, blued, 8" (he was guessing) that had "IHMSA" stamped on the side of the shroud. The shroud had two large ports on each side (similar to some the ports I have seen on 445Mag shrouds). No barrel was seen with this shroud. It did not have a front sight on the shroud.
My questions are:
* What makes a shroud (and barrel) specific to IHMSA?
* Does it have a tighter tolerance?
* Why the side ports? Cosmetic or purposely designed?
* Since he did not see the barrel, does the matching barrel have some porting also?
* Does the IHMSA only come in 357Mag?
Prior to the show, I asked my friend to keep a look out for DWA parts and that was the only thing he came up with. We almost scored on a 714 several months ago, but we were about 30 minutes too late on making an offer.
Thanks ahead of time.

I cant answer all the questions but heres what I have seen:
* What makes a shroud (and barrel) specific to IHMSA?
Generally the entire gun would be an IHMSA gun. I think all the IHMSA 22's were SA only, not sure on others.
* Does it have a tighter tolerance?
I would suspect not ( at least on the shroud)
* Why the side ports? Cosmetic or purposely designed?
Purpose - indicates a ported gun - barrel would be ported or it might be a two barrel set; one ported and one not.
* Since he did not see the barrel, does the matching barrel have some porting also?
See above.
* Does the IHMSA only come in 357Mag?
See #1. I suspect they came in several calibers and frames. However, I would not think there would be a ported 22 or such.

I'll give you my take on the finish of the IHMSA options.
1 the IHMSA had special contacts with Dan Wesson to supply some IHMSA guns of various calibers with Member numbers as sn.
2 not sure that tolerences were tighter, dought that they could make any gun any better.
3the side ports were called slots, which were machined to reduce weight to allow gun to make weight for the standards at the time for revolver class.
4the barrels in the super mags were not ported, as far as I know, some one will correct me if I'm wrong. Slotting did not serve any other purpose other than weight reduction.
5IHMSA marked guns came in many other calibers. I believe they even had a 357 mag field pistol. again I stand to be corrected hopefully others wil add to this.

It sounds like you're describing this. If there was no slot for the front sight, it should have shipped with factory scope rings mounted.
So far I've seen the "IHMSA Field Pistol" in .32 Mag & .357 Mag configurations. I'm not sure if there were other calibers. I'm also not sure why these were made, other than to assume they were for a certain class in IHMSA shooting?
I see them most often in Pacs like this, with a scoped & iron sight shroud set...and I think they're all Monson guns.
BTW, the only other factory slotted small frame shrouds I've seen so far, have been on the Palmer plant's "Gold Series" 15-2's.(sorry for the small pics)

Thanks guys for the feedback!
Charger Fan: your first pic is similar to what my friend described (minus the scope & rings). There was some rib vents, no front sight, just the stamping and no barrel/b. nut to be found. There was no stamping to indicate any "gold series" connection either.
The seller did not know where it came from - he found it laying around someone else's gun table and thought it might be a nice thing to have on his table.
My friend did get the dealer's contact info ... so if anyone is looking for this shroud, let me know and I can contact the dealer. Next I see the dealer, I will get a pic of it and post it here.

The IHMSA shroud you have, like the one pictured by CF, is for a Field Pistol gun. This is a category of silhouette shooting for factory guns using straight-wall cases of .357 Magnum length or shorter. Competition is with either iron sights or scopes (both in separate divisions) and it is all done from the standing position.
IHMSA got with Dan Wesson to have them produce Field Pistol Pacs...a complete revolver with regular factory iron sights, and an additional shroud with factory-mounted scope base and rings, all in a DW briefcase. Just add the scope of your choice.
The Field Pistol categories have weight limits, 4 pounds with iron sights and 5 pounds with scope. The scoped shrouds needed the "SuperMag-style" slots so they would make the weight limit and be legal to shoot.
The barrels themselves are NOT ported, as they would be illegal for the category, so the shrouds are not ported either, only the slots on the sides. These shrouds did not come with front sights either.
IHMSA also offered the Field Pistol Pac in .32-20. I can't say for sure, but I THINK I remember them also in .22Magnum.

Pine, after that post, I hope they don't try to pass off a 351W as anything...

Just got back from a Wild Game Dinner .... but earlier this morning, I made it to the gun show.
I sad to report that the "Shroud of Torino" was sold earlier in the week. No additional info on who the buyer was, but if he decides to resell it back to the dealer, the dealer will be calling me.

Here's what my friend had to say about his IHMSA gun:
What do you mean by field grade? My 44 is a standard model with 10" light barrel (heavy bbl model was to heavy for production class at the time). The only difference is that it is a limited edition for IHMSA members that used our IHMSA membership # as the serial #. I don't know anyone else that took advantage of the offer at the time.

Ok, that makes sense. I was thinking your friend had a IHMSA .44 with "Field Grade" roll marked on the shroud, like the pics posted above.
The IHMSA member number as part of the serial number makes sense now. There are a bunch of other DW's with IHMSA member numbers in the s/n, but most are usually SuperMags, from what I've seen so far. This is the first I've heard of a .44 having one. That's pretty neat.
For example, here's a 7445 that's currently on GB...
The Dan Wesson revolvers seem to have quite a bit of history that no person seems to know. In a way not having records of what happened keeps these guns more interesting.
As a side note what is the NIB Model 15 on Gunbroker worth? Here's a link:
