Hi all, first post here. I have an opportunity to buy a DW 715 Pistol Pac but wanted to ask a few things first. Take a look at the pics. The owner says the gun looks to be bead blasted stainless. He is the 2nd owner and says it wasn't done by him. He does not know if the original owner did the bead blast or if it came from the factory that way.
The gun is a Monson manufacture, serial #SD0184xx. The grip also looks custom as I've never seen one like it before.
My questions are, is the bead blast factory or did someone do that at some point? Are the grips factory or home made? Does the bead blast lower the normal value of the gun? Any other comments?
Thanks all!
Here is a pic of a comparison to a stainless gun:

Welcome to DWF! Thats a great looking small frame DW. While no authority my self, if that was a factory finish it would be the very first I ever heard of a monson gun to have such. Fancy finishes really didn't come about until Norwich guns that I know of.
As to what it does to the value, if a buyer is looking for a "like new in box" then this may not be the gun for him. If a buyer is looking for an usual gun .. and what DW isn't, then you have that coverd.
Soap Box, Ballot Box, Ammo Box
in that order.

The serial number indicates the gun is in fact stainless steel. I have never seen one bead blasted before. It does give the gun a unique appearance. I cannot sat if it left the factory that way. Nor do I know if one could have been special ordered with such a finish.
The wood grip appears to be after-market or custom.

It may just be a function of the photos, but that finish looks darker than I would expect a simple bead blast to look. Has this possibly been refinished with something like that "dove grey" finish that pops up occasionally? In the last picture, the color of the sideplate is quite different that the sideplate screw.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

I was able to get a few more pics:
I've made up my mind. I'm going to buy this! It surely isn't in stock form and has a few marks on it but it's unique and most importantly a DW! To complicate things, I live in CA and cannot buy a DW revolver from out of state. Must be a face to face transaction at a CA FFL, with a CA resident so my choices are very limited.

I would guess that it's been bead blasted sometime after it left the factory. I do agree though, that the finish appears darker in your pics than bead blasted stainless usually looks. Maybe it's just the way the pics turned out? If it's been coated, pulling the side plate off would be an easy way to determine that answer.
I think you've made a good decision to buy it, it appears to be in nice shape from here.
aboard!

For what it is worth, My 7414 that is shown on the header at times and took the hog in the hunting photos had this finish when I purchased it. I sent it to Keith and had it finished to what you see today. Because it was a 7414 it was worth the effort, I am not sure unless the 715 was a REAL bargain that you would want to spend the money to refinish if you can't live with it the way it is. The bead blast finish was awful to keep clean because it was so rough.
