Had a chance to go to the range with one of my sons today. We set up paper targets at 25 ft. to check our sights and then put up sporting clays at 25 yds.
I started with my DW 22 VH8 and was not too pleased with the accuracy, put on the 6" and it was a totally different story. My son was using my ruger mk 2 with a red dot. At 25 yds. the clays were sitting ducks, the pieces were a better challenge. There were no 40x40s or 1" groups but we had more fun picking out a chunk of clay and seeing who could hit it first.
This is the first time I really got to shoot the the DW 22, the 8" vh barrel was not much to my liking, a bit heavy. When I switched to a 6" barrel it was a much better handling piece. The accuracy was super. Hitting a 1" 6 shot group at 25 ft. for me is more than acceptable.
Trying hit a target before my son could, he with a red dot sight and me with iron sights, proved to be a challenge. But I held my own, hitting my share of fragments.
All told a priceless day spent with my son.

Any day at the range is a fun day, regardless of what you are shooting. Even more so, to share it with your son. Clay pieces with a .22 is fun way to spend the day, challenging little targets that disappear when hit. When we go to the plinking range, I can spend the entire day busting pieces with a .22. You did have a golden day.

Sounds like you guys both had a great time!
How old is your son?
That we did!!
Son #2 is 19, and has been shooting with me for over 10 years. Unlike his 2 brothers, he has the patience to practice and enjoys shooting. The outdoor range near our home in SE Pa. ( Phila. Area) allows shooting at the clays and adds a little more satisfaction than punching holes in paper.
Son #1, who is 21, has not the patience to just punch holes in targets. But his shooting skills ,with a rifle or bow, has netted him 7 white tails in the last 5 years.
Son #3, is 10, He has been to the range on several occasions and seems to share #1's talent and #2's desire to do well.
Luckily, I was able to stock pile a few rounds of ammo before I lost my job, as I would not be able to afford todays ammo prices. Reloading was never something I was interested in, too many other things to do (work, fish, work, hunt, work, tie flies, work, go to range, work).
Now too much free time, hope the ammo lasts!!

At least you're making good use of your free time, a range day with the offspring is never a bad use of time. Neither of my boys have patience to do targets for too long, they'd rather shoot at cans & water jugs...and other stuff that's fun to knock holes in. I'm that way too, so I guess the apples didn't fall far from the tree in that regard. LOL

Nice report Mikela. I'll add to the others that a day with your son at the range is a great day no matter how the guns performed. I have had equally varying results with the DW 22's and different barrels. If you have not already done so, check out IHMSA 80X80's range report with the .22. It contains a post with a link to an artlicle about .22 ammunition that is quite informative. Your DW 8" barrell may well need a different brand ammo to work well.
