I JUST FIRED MY NEW TO ME .44 MAG. 8" BARREL UN-PORTED... WHAT A SWEETIE..
DEAD ACCURATE.. I SEE WHAT ALL THE FUSS IS ABOUT.. LOVE IT..
ALSO CHANGED AND FIRED THE 6" BARREL.. COMPENSATED.. AGAIN.. AWESOME
I BELEIVE THE PORTING REALLY DOES CUT DOWN THE RECOIL..
SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME IF THE 6" IS SUPPOSED TO BE LESS FIERCE THEN THE 8" BECAUSE THE 6" PORTED WAS ABOUT 1/2 OF WHAT THE 8" UN-PORTED WAS..

HAHAHAHAHA... YEAH SO AM I !! I'D REALLY HATE IT IF I DIDN'T LIKE IT..
BTW... I RAN ABOUT 20 ROUNDS THRU THE 6" COMPENSATED BARREL AND TOOK IT APART.. IT WAS RATHER DIRTY...
KEITH HAD WARNED ME ABOUT THAT.. BUT I LOVE TO TAKE GUNS APART, AND CLEAN THEM ETC.. FOR ME IT'S PART OF THE FUN OF OWNING GUNS.. GETTING TO SEE HOW THEY WORK..
ANYWAY.. I CAN SEE HOW NOT CLEANING THAT COMPENSATED BARREL WOULD LEAD TO ALL KINDS OF PROBLEMS..
WHEN I SWAPPED OUT THE 8" FOR THE 6".. THE 6" SHROUD DIDN'T HAVE THE LITTLE GUIDE PIN IN IT... SO MY SON AND I LOOKED AT THE 8" AND THERE WAS THE PIN.. FIRMLY STUCK IN THE 8" SHROUD.. WE FIRED THE 6" ANYWAY, AS IT WAS LINED UP PERFECTLY...
THAT NIGHT I PULLED OUT THE PIN FROM THE SHROUD AFTER LOOKING AT THE DW WEBSITE THAT SHOWS THAT THE PIN STAYS IN THE FRAME SECTION... SO THE PIN IS A SPLIT TYPE AND I JUST ENLARGED IT SLIGHTLY BY TAPPING A FISH FILLETING KNIFE BLADE EVENLY DOWN THE LENGTH OF THE SLOT, THEN CAREFULLY FORCING IT DOWN INTO THE HOLE IN THE PISTOL FRAME SECTION. THEN I TOOK A SMALL CARBIDE STEEL DREMMEL TOOL CUTTER AND JUST EVER SO LIGHTLY REAMED OUT THE HOLES ON THE 2 SHROUDS.. BOTH FIT PERFECTLY AND DO NOT PULL THE PIN OUT WHEN I REMOVE THEM FROM THE FRAME..
LIKE I SAID WORKING ON GUNS IS 1/2 THE FUN... WHEN IT WORKS AND YOU DONT BREAK SOMETHING... LOL.

Been there done that with the pins.
I have a new to me 744 that I will order a tool kit for tomorrow. It has the ported shroud, but unported new barrel from what it looks like. So I will see about what a ported barrel cost or if even available.
My thoughts are leaning toward a 4" barrel & shroud later for the gun. Anyone ever shoot one with the 4" barrel?

I have a Palmer .44 with a fixed 6" barrel that I think is exceptinal for a Palmer gun. With a scope it will shoot just over 1" at 50 yards from a solid rest. The only thing I don't like about it, is if I load them on the warm side I see swelling just off the rim which indicates a size issue in the cylinder. If I'm careful with the loads they don't swell too bad and it still shoots awesome groups with about anything I put through it.
