Im thinking about bidding on this gun

dan wesson 44Image Enlarger

The external barrel nut means its an older/early production gun correct? What else can be told about the pistol just from the picture. (if i decide to bid, I plan on taking with the seller first)

PS anybody on the board have a 44mag DW they want to part with? Please dont make me buy a super redhawk.....

Please don't buy a super redhawk instead. That is a 44 from probably the Palmer era, after 1991 , I think based on the compensated shroud. It seems all large frames were made at the Palmer location but roll marked Monson till sometime in 91. The compensated shroud ( not external nut) was from that time period on. You will need a compensated barrel wrench for that gun. You can get them from EWK if on does not come with it. If you do not knock that on down there are always some on Gunbroker to be had. Good luck, that looks to be a beauty.

Um I'm not sure maybe I am incorrect but maybe you are confusing things? The pic is of a .44 magnum that has a compensated barrel assembly. By external nut do you mean the early porkchop type .357s?

The .44 in your pic looks like a nice one, it has been running on Gunbroker a while without hitting the reserve. No telling what he wants for it. There are always .44 mags coming up on GB. If you want my unsolicited amateur opinion, here is one with real potential-

I do not have any firsthand info about it, but it looks like a real nice one and the extra 10" barrel makes it worth the Buynow. (in my opinion). And it has a rather expensive really nice looking Hogue wood grip on. If I did not have 2 .44 Dans already I would be asking the seller some good questions on that one.

Super Redhawks are great, but you can find a nice Dan Wesson .44 and have an awesome solid gun that is a little more speciallaugh

The 44 mag with this type of comped barrel is from the Palmer era, ask the seller where the firearm was manufactured, I'm sure this is a Palmer production.

I have one in Stainless like this one.

The buy it now is a good price for what you are getting, not to many of the type of comped barrels around.

I have to agree. That is a nice looking 44 mag, especially with that 10" B/A.

if you find one...what's your plan?

I just referred to it as external as it has a knurled edge protrudes from the barrel shroud while my model 15 doesnt have that, the whole nut sits inside the shroud and I would call it flush/internal.

The 2 barrel set large frame looks nice. Although I really like the factory comped barrel. hmmm.....

I think it is figured out. Comp shroud nice but the two barrel blue with 10" barrel is a beauty.

That knurled edge you see is the "cap" that screws into the end of the shroud on a compensated barrel assembly. The barrel itself is held in place with a conventional DW nut, about 2" deeper than a standard BA would be. That is why Ole Dog suggested you will need a comp barrel wrench to be able to remove the nut on this one.

Here is a comp shroud on the left, with a standard .44 shroud on the right. You can see the end of the barrel way down in there, on the one to the left.

If I were looking for another 44 I'd buy that with the two barrels in a heartbeat.
