So, I bought a 6" HV barrel from Mike Kline (thank you very much Mike!) and changed the barrel on my DW 15-2 today. Very SWEET! I read the instructions here....

http://www.notpurfect.com/main/dwrev.htm#change

Generally I'm old enough to know that sometimes no matter how simple something seems and no matter how apparent it may be, there are often little things that you need to know and that only a person who has done it can tell you.

So, I changed the barrel and here is the result!

Good job!  Looks like you got it on upside right, or is that right side up?  Careful not to crank down too hard on the barrel nut; they are a bugger to get off if overtightened.  I take a wrench with me to the range and check the nut (not the one pulling the trigger) every so often as they sometimes loosen after a few cylinders full.  Better to re-tighten than not be able to get it off at all.

I do like those dark grips you have there.............Drool

(Man, that looks good... maybe I should have kept that barrel.... Laugh )...  Congrats, glad you could put it to good use.  I like the blue guns with dark grips.

Is the nut really coming loose or is the length of the barrel getting longer as it heats up making the illusion of a loose nut???  If the latter, tightening the nut while the barrel is warm/hot will make it almost impossible to loosen when cooled off.

I really like the finish on your DW, and those dark grips are nice.  Wish the finish on my model 44 was that good.

The original manual states to check it after a few cylinders and if you don't, it can get very loose, as I found out on my 1st shooting experience many years ago with a new in the box Monson 15-6 bought from a hardware store.Range Time

 Mox,

do you think heating up the barrel with some ammo before trying to remove would help those with stuck barrels.

If metal expands when hot and contracts when cold, it would seem that heating the barrel would only make the nut tighter than it already is. I suppose, perhaps, by heating and cooling repeatedly it might loosen the nut. Although both the barrel and the nut will expand and contract. Unless they are of different compositions and expand and contract to different degrees. I don't know. I'm not a metalurgist and I don't even play one on television.

It doesn't seem to matter what method you try to remove stuck barrels/nuts... your DW will always take the opposite method Laugh... heat it up, cool it down, soak it in a variety of penetrants, try to tighten it further, try to back it off, double nut it, etc...

I've had a couple super tight ones on some of my recently acquired Porkchops...but they gave up without bloodshed when they saw they were going up against one of EWK's wrenches!Cool

Well, almost...the nut was stuck hard enough on my M14, that the barrel came out with it instead.Worship

That's ok though, five minutes later I had it off by clamping the barrel in a vise, with a chunk of radiator hose between...still using EWK's wrench. Those wrenches are tough !
