So, I took the 738P out to the range today, allong with a new Remington Model Five. Shooting the Rem reminded me why I hate bead front sights.
More to the point, the DW is hitting about 7" high at 10 yards, which is a bit more than I would like. (with 158 SWC and 148 DEWC loads) . 135 Grain Gold Dots strike high as well.
Any ideas? Unfortunately the 738P has a fixed front sight, so I can't swap it for a taller sight like I could on a regular model.

Interesting. My Lil' Dan prints about 2 inches high and about 3 inches left at short ranges. This is in the hands of several people. Can't wait to get to an outdoor range this summer so I can shoot some greater distances. Unfortunately the closest outdoor range is over 40 miles away.
Well, it's about dead on at 100 yards. I'll try something lighter/faster, that should bring it down a little bit.
On a related note, I had two light primer strikes firing double action (WSP primers) so I am thinking it may need a new hammer return spring. Anyone know if it by chance uses the same spring as a model 15?

This may be more than you are willing to do if even possible but will a model 15 shroud fit the Lil'Dan. If it does you could then change front sights. Just something that popped in my head. Let us know if its possible.
Wisdom is merely the realization of how little one knows, therefore I am wise.

I wanted to add to this discussion that my (new to me) Lil' Dan also shoots high & to the left. At 15 yards, I can get it on paper with POA, but anything further than that, it's off the paper.
Next time I take it out, I think I'll try placing tape on the front sight at varying heights, to see how much taller it needs to be.
BTW, it's a fun little gun.

The solution is simple...aim about 7" low.
In a gun sighted in at a specific range, lower velocity loads generally will shoot higher, while higher velocity loads tend to shoot lower. Bullet speed is the issue...the slower bullet will remain inside the barrel longer, while the gun is recoiling upwards, thus it is launched later while the muzzle is in a higher position.
A high-velocity bullet exits the muzzle faster, while the barrel is at a lower position during recoil. Same thing applies to heavy versus light bullets. The heavy ones should strike higher on target, due to their slower exit speed and quicker recoil impulse. I had a .44 Magnum that ran out of elevation at 200 meters, shooting near max 240 grain loads. Had to hold right over the target. Switching to 300 grain loads, I was able to sight-in dead on at 200.
I'm guessing that 738P was designed for 158 grain +P loads. Try some.
